The World Wildlife Fund had registered their trademark before the wrestling entity started using “WWF.” I’m not sure whether there was also a claim for copyright infringement, although there may have been.

That’s incorrect- the World Wildlife Fund had registered the WWF trademark long before the World Wrestling Federation ever started using that same WWF trademark. There was a major trademark infringement lawsuit over this and the World Wrestling Federation lost this case.
