I remember a Bob Hope special circa the 1970s of epic length (2-3 hours) with more guest stars than Madx4 World and all the Jerry Lewis telethons put together. It was done as a murder mystery and all the guests ended up floating in a hotel pool (which overflowed with bodies by the end). Spoiler: Johnny turned out to be the murderer in a gag involving all the dead celebs as Tonight Show guest hosts.

I think you're referring to a 1976 special called "Joys", a spoof of Jaws.
