There is a certain comedic thing that Bob Hope and other comics do that I love. I think Bob Hope was the best at this though. It's somewhat hard to describe but here it goes. Bob would tell a joke, a second person would then come back with another joke that was usually an insult of some type to Bob. Bob would immediately hear the joke and start to agree with the insult for a few words that realize it was an insult and stop his response then. I'm not sure if there is a technical comedic name for this style of response. Does anybody else get what I am talking about? Does anyone else find that style funny as I do?

It was one of Hope's great moments. Nobody could do it like Hope did. Jack Carson also did a similar look. He and Dennis Morgan made similar films at Warner Brothers that Bing Crosby and Bob Hope made at Paramount.

Yeah, sorta a verbal double take. A "hey, wait a minute" moment. I've seen others do it too, but nobody did that stuff better than Hope. At his peak, he had maybe the most amazing comedy timing ever. No one else could say lines as fast as him and still give great inflections. If you watch his movies during his best years (up to Alias Jesse James in 1959) you can see why Woody Allen, David Letterman, and others admired him. He was a great physical comedian too, but he could probably do verbal twists and turns better than anyone. At his best, he was a very funny guy.
