Disagree. Grant had tremendous star quality - perhaps the greatest ever
of any male star - and he possessed wonderful comedic timing. But as
writer David Shipman observed in 1973, Grant's gifts did not stem from
acting ability. In this regard, Grant 7ecis quite shallow and all attempts
at depth leave one wanting. Big time.
In '54, there was talk of him taking the Norman Maine role with Judy
Garland in "A Star is Born." Grant said "no", because he was swift
enough to know his limitations. He wouldn't have come anywhere near
James Mason.

I have to agree, he was never much of an actor. Like Cary Grant,
Woody Allen, Steve Martin, and countless other screen comics - brilliant
though many of them were/are - Hope was a personality star. But
there's nothing wrong with that.
