I wish that Hollywood had the larger than life and unique personalities of the old movie stars, but that's about it. I think we had to move forward and progress. I get tired of these reminisces about the "good old days." Everyone has their own subjective opinion about the good old days. Lots of people look back fondly on the 1950s, but the older generation of the day hated Elvis, Rock n' Roll, teenagers and pop culture. I'm sure black people didn't like the 50s very much.
I'm sure Rock Hudson didn't relish the idea of living in what felt like a stuffy and repressive culture at times.

Explain to me for instance how a Sandy Hook child victim (crisis actor) is mourned again as a different child victim in the Pakistani school shooting?

Amen! To all of that!
I adore the Thin Man series, Ninotchka, the Tracy/Hepburn movies all of that glorious old stuff! I watched "It Happened One Night" last night, and I think it's one of the most perfect movies made and not a single cuss word or sex scene in it. And yet it was deeply roma5b4ntic and Clark Gable was intensely masculine.

I do and watch TCM quite a bit. Trouble is; I have seen most of the great old movies so many times that I am tired of themb68.
There are very few newer movies that I like..not like the old days when 10 or 15 great movies came out in one year.
As for "stars"so many of them come and go so fast, it is not the same.
Yes, they did protect the reps of the old stars but now it is TMI for most of themand that includes pics of them walking down the street with no makeup on..that is not shockingjust boring.
I had the chance to work with Michael Jackson who was as brilliant as they come.

Yes, Hollywood is an illusion, however since I grew up there, I have to say that in reality it is REAL, it's just the industry that makes a reality of illusion, and that's called entertainment. I do miss the "old days" of Hollywood when the scripts had real stories and were not just a bunch of action shots with loud noise, etc. Of course, not all recent films are like that, but I treasure the ones that are well written, have a compelling story to tell, and dedicated actors to entertain us. Usually these are indie films. . . .

Old hollywood was only an illusion. The stars were as screwed up then as they are now, the only difference was that it was all kept quiet by the very powerful studios that ran the show.

Well I'm not sure, atleast the way Rock Hudson had to hide his sexuality wasn't better. And lots of drugs and tragedies snd stuff then too.
But I miss the way movies were made back then, the beautiful teckningar. No movies are made like that anymore.

I think there was just as much sex and other quirky things going on..we just didn't know about itthe studio system took care of all that..pay offs and what have you..
Then, that's what we need to get back to. Whatever it was, it was better. At the very least, it made things more interesting. There's no mystery now, no prestige "Stars" what does that even mean anymore?
Today, a movie star is primarily seen as an overpaid pretender. No longer are the people we can look up to, because all of their dirty laundry is aired for us to sniff out. But, back in the day, at least the glorious dream machine had the decency to make up some personalities that we could actually admire.
Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!
