I really don't know much about the man. I haven't seen too many of his films, but recently I watched Seconds, which I thought was very intriguing film. I've been watching interviews with him on youtube, and he came across as a very humble person, in my opinion. Just curious.

Hudson was a complex man and a very fascinating person. I don't think there were many people who knew the whole man. George Nader, Mark Miller and Elizabeth Taylor were among those who did get close, but I think he only let everyone else know a parts of him. He could be shy and withdrawn, but there are plenty of stories of his professionalism, warmth, humor, generosity and kindness.

Hudson was a complex man. I don't think anyone really knew the complete man. He was all things to all people. He could be withdrawn, secretive and yet completely outgoing depending on the individual.

According to 'Rock Hudson; His Story' by Sara Davidson; Mark Miller and George Nader referred to the period of Hudson's rise to stardom as "the Impossible Years" when Hudson, in his own words, became "Charlie Movie Star." Hudson developed a slight swagger when he walked; he became more pompous and everything was on his terms. If he wanted to see a friend, he would unilaterally set the time, "Come here 238at Seven on Thursday." He would choose the restaurant and pay, he would never let anyone else pay. If he was invited to a party, he had to approve the guest list ahead of time. Mark and George began referring to Hudson as "The Movie Star" or "the M.I." - the Matinee Idol. He was rude to waiters, and at home, when he had guests, he would take the seat nearest the phone. If it rang, he would say, "Hold it, nobody say a word." He would talk to the caller, then hang up and say, "Okay, you can go ahead now."
There was also the private and distant man who dev5b4eloped an obsession with privacy. He developed a reputation for a being wooden, a poor interviewer, so colorless that it was a waste of time to ask him questions. One writer described him as "a windup doll", another said he was "the most difficult star to know in Hollywood - always pleasant but totally nonrevealing."
Kirk Douglas writes in his autobiography 'The Ragman's Son';
"I had a problem working with Rock Hudson that I did not understand at the time. He avoided any kind of direct contact with me. I was aware of how difficult it must have been for him - his co-star also the producer, the boss. I tried everything I could to make him feel comfortable. But Rock always had a strange attitude toward meWhen I saw him socially, it was all pleasant. But there was never any feeling of friendship - or of animosity. Just this strange distance and neutrality. In Rock, I saw what the rest of the world saw: a tall, dark, husky actor. It never occurred to me that he was homosexual. I don't think that way. I don't draw a line between masculine and feminine. We all have both sides."
Doris Day recalls;
I remember asking someone Is his name really Rock? Thats odd, dont you think? I knew nothing about him!
From the trivia on WRITTEN ON THE WIND [1956]:
Despite Rock Hudson's pleasant camaraderie with everyone on the set and his apparent happiness in his marriage, Dorothy Malonb68e said she found him to be somewhat of a loner who hid his feelings of sadness and insecurity. Nevertheless, she developed a bond with him that helped her through moments of tension on the set. "Rock gave me that sense of security whenever I worked with him."
All the cast members had compliments for Rock Hudson. He made a particular impression on Robert Stack, who definitely had the flashier part, while, as Hudson himself noted about his own role, "as usual, I am so pure I am impossible." Hudson, of course, was the star, and one of the top actors at the studio, while Stack was a lesser name on loan to Universal for the picture. "Almost any other actor I know in the businesswould have gone up to the head of the studio and said, 'Hey, look, man, I'm the star - you cut this guy down or something,'" Stack said. "But he never did. I never forgot that."
According to Dorothy Malone, Rock Hudson helped her with her performance. "I loved Sirk as a director," she said, "but there was one day he just couldn't get through to me." Quietly and patiently, Hudson took Malone aside and, because he had so much experience with Douglas Sirk already, was able to make her understand what the director was trying to tell her.
And from THE TARNISHED ANGELS [1957]
During the location shooting in San Diego of this film, Robert Stack's wife was about to have their first child. While filming the tense scene where Stack propositions his own wife (played by Dorothy Malone), suddenly a plane flew right by the cameras with letters tailing four feet tall proclaiming IT'S A GIRL! Rock Hudson had arranged to have the hospital call immediately when the news came and hired a stunt pilot to tow the message behind the plane. Stack was deeply moved by Hudson's generosity, saying in his autobiography, "It's a moment I've never forgotten. Anybody who tells me that Rock Hudson isn't a first-class gent had better put up his dukes."
Lee Garlington remembers Hudson:
Some share their memories with Larry King.
"You know, Larry, he was the nicest and I was born in this town, I say nicest in the sense of being more aware of other people, more caring." - Robert Stack
"And he was a very, very nice man, and he had a very nice manner, and he smiled and greeted me." - Dr. Michael Gotleib
"I only spent a month with him. And it was when he was dying. Of course I liked him. But I didn't really get to know him until after he died and 5b4I was given the job of piecing together his li

From what I have heard, he was good to his friends but treated dates/sex partners like meat. Unfortunately a lot of men gay and straight can be like that.
I think most stars are pretty self involved but overall he was probablya bit of good and bad like the rest of us. I am watching his Dynasty episodes now. I don't know what to think of his keeping his illness a secret while doing kissing scenes. Only he knew what was going through his mind at the time.
