It's very possible that Olivia Hussey was the most beautiful woman in the world around 1970. I have never seen anyone look as exquisite as she did in Romeo and Juliet and was even more amazed to see that she didn't age a day when she did Jesus of Nazareth, The Last Days of Pompeii, and Ivanhoe years later.
All of this contributes to my curiosity about why she didn't do many more movies. I understand that some of them were horrible failures (several with horrible failure names) but in American cinema, beautiful people will be thrown into roles regardless of how awful their acting might be (i.e. Heather Graham, Denise Richards, Keanu Reeves, I could go on forever). That taken, even the most typecast pretty people eventually stumble upon a great role with a great director working with a great script which makes for a great movie that everyone remembers despite a poor performance (like Kelly McGillis).
I understand that Olivia had some personal problems that accompanied her instant fame, but anyone with such enormous talent and unfathomable looks has to be able to draw confidence from somewhere and put themselves in front of the audience to be seen and adored.

There were two women that came close to her beauty in the 70's. They are Christina Lindberg and Marie Liljedahl.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a big time fan of both Jennifer Connelly and Jodie Foster, but I don't think either one of them hold a candle to Olivia Hussey. No offense mind, I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I respect yours, just had to disagree.

I think what you mean to say is Jolie's features are too "African" for most white people's frame of mind.
The fact you'd pick Connelly-who has thin lips with a narrow nose-is proof enough of this. Monica Bellucci also reinforces this point.

Out of the women on that list, the only one I'd put even close to her is Connelly.
I think Jolie is about the most overrated sex symbol to ever walk the face of the earth. Her features are too large for her thin face, and her body is unnaturally thin, she does absolutely nothing for me.
I'd pick Monica Bellucci as the most beautiful woman of all time, Olivia was is/quite beautiful though. I can't think of a more beautiful woman from the 70's or earlier.
If you love Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it copy this and make your signature!

Kristin Kreuk is half-Chinese and half-Dutch. I think she's absolutely gorgeous, as are a lot of other women with whom people have countered my Olivia Hussey nomination, but the reason that Hussey wins, in my book, is her downright allure. One can look at many of these woman and think they are beautiful, think dirty thoughts, etc., but Olivia Hussey is that rarest breed. She is borderline inspirational. It is hard to take your eyes off of her once you notice her. Beauty like that inspires poetry.

I completely agree with this! She was quite possibly the most stunning creature to have walked the Earth in
Romeo and Juliet
, but that was the absolute peak of her beauty. There are many beautiful girls who peak early in their teens and their looks taper off from there, and while they still remain beautiful they can never return to the breathtaking, almost impossible zenith they were once at. She's extremely fortunate that her beauty was captured at its best moment, and in one of the most iconic films ever, too, so that it would be remembered by all forever! And to think she dated the most beautiful Romeo to ever be committed to screen, Leonard Whiting sigh What a life.
In my opinion, no actress in Hollywood today could hold a candle to her classic, timeless, feminine beauty. The closest you could get are Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Penelope Cruz, and Lily Collins. Most of our movie stars don't really look like movie stars anymorewhich is fine as long as they're good actorsbut it's strange to look back on a time when actresses really did look like that.

I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. It's true: she didn't retain her beauty for very long after Romeo and Juliet. But, in that movie, there was some kind of ethereal loveliness and purity that she radiated, transcending beautiful. Man, that gorgeous look was so ephemeral; after a short while her looks just withered away like a grape on a vine.
You can't hold a candle to Gulbenkian.

I think that Olivia Hussey, as she was in Romeo and Juliet, was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. Truly, I do not believe that any words could do her beauty justice. I think it is just so sad that she didn't remain that beautiful for very long at all. By the time she was in her mid-twenties, although she was still a very attractive woman, I wouldn't say she was anything like as heart-rendingly exquisite as she used to be. But as Juliet, her face could have launched a thousand ships!
