The man's filmography speaks for itself: CAPRICORN ONE, THE STAR CHAMBER, 2010, RUNNING SCARED, THE PRESIDIO, NARROW MARGIN Christ, this guy made some exciting, funny, and truly challenging stuff - then he started making utter crap. "What happened?," I ask everyone out there I wish the Hyams of old would return. The Hyams that shot things himself and made them look beautiful! Now he just makes weak films that look like garbage. Sigh. Pete, if you can read this; please come back!

I think Peter Hyams is okay director and producer. The films I like from him are 20b6810, Outland, Monster Squad, Stay Tuned (which could of been better if Tim Burton produced it), and End of Days. But Sound of Thunder is his worst movie and is the Battlefield Earth of 2005. I think the reason why we haven't seen or heard more of Peter Hyams is he could be planing to retire, find a movie to make, or he is dying cause he was born in the 1940's.

Apart from A Sound of Thunder and The Musketeer I quite like all the other movies he's done. In fact I think I own more of his movies than just about any other director (apart from Ridley Scott and Spielberg)

Well it just seems the Peter Hyams of old will make a comeback
Hyams is filming right now "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt", a remake of the classic Fritz Lang film noir. Ok, usually I'm not too enthusiastic about remakes, we've gotten so much of them these past years I'm fed up. But here's the thing : the screenplay is penned by Hyams himself, and all of us (not many) Hyams lovers out there know that the guy made his best films from his own scripts (BUSTING, CAPRICORN ONE, OUTLAND, THE STAR CHAMBER)and it's nice to see him make a return in the crime genre, where he seems so comfortable.
It stars Michael Dougla1c84s, who worked with Hyams previously almost 25 years ago in THE STAR CHAMBER.
Maybe this will be Peter Hyams' return to form, who knows. I sure hope so

Hyams made too many movies that the critics hated (many of which changed their minds later) and his reputation suffered because of it. Hollywood is not a system that rewards people whose films stand the test of the time: you have to be loved by the critics and make money NOW.
Hyams is skating by on whatever remains of his reputation, but studios aren't going to give him a major budget anymore.

Forget Hyams, he had his chance. he's got his foot in the door and he blew it.
it's time for new talent, like us.
wouldn't YOU want a chance to direct your own film then have Hyams churn out another bad film?

He has done some underatted gems in my book.Outland,Star Chamber,2010,The Presdio, and the Relic. He does smart science fiction and makes the characters engaging. He did the best van Damme flick of the 90's with Timecop. It had that political backdrop that always graces his movies. He also proved he can do comedy with Running scared.I thought the pairing of Crystal and the late Gregory Hines was good.Hyams always get s a decent preformance from his cast.
He was kind of miscast for End of Days. But he did a real good job.He also got the best "acting" from Arnold I think we are ever gonna see.Shoulda been a bigger hit.
The Musketeer was crap in my book.Yet his visual stlye was there.
Sudden Death could have been more than a die-hard knock-off without the unintentional comedy.
Sound of thunder might have done well if it had been released when it should have. The same with stay Tuned,a forgotten comedy of 1992.Its a mixed affair at best. But the leads J1c84ohn Ritter and Pam Dawber are very good.
His best bet is to latch onto the political thriller or thinking mans sci fi movie for a comeback.

"2010" was, I thought, an exceptional accomplishment, balancing the intellectual with the action with the humor, all with a wonderful pace, pertinent special effects, and a determination NOT to do a Stanley Kubrick, thank god. Ever since, I've wondered what happened to him. Too bad. It's as if James Cameron made "Titanic," then never made another movie.

Yeah, I saw that, but for some reason the look of his films has suffered as well. Maybe, like John Carpenter, he just plain got tired and gave in. It's really a shame in both cases.
