Peter Hyams is absolutely one of the worst directors in Hollywood. It is great his output has declined. Even his best movies are mediocre at best. 2010 and Star Chamber, and Capricorn One would have better if Hyams was not the director. He is also a bad Cinematographer. His most recent work is really awful and incompetant. End of Days, Sound of Thunder, and The Relic are awful. He also directed Two Jean Claude Van Damme movies! Enough Said!

Hyams delivered an excellent adaptation of Sir arthur C. Clarke's sequel novel to the classic science fiction film. I would hardly qualify that as formulaic short sighted crap.
If you want formulaic short sighted crap, you need not look any furthur than the Sci-Fi Channel's awful remake of Battlestar Galactica.
Now that remake is formulaic short sighted crap!

No, I'm not blind. I just have my opinion. To be fair, it would have to be tough to make a sequel to a cultural icon.
But he killed the mystique. He delivered formulaic short-sighted crap. He didn't leave any room for the viewers to use their imagination or intelligence which is what I really loved about 2001 ASO.
But I guess you and I differ in our taste of movies. I've got no problem with that.

To the person that started this thread.
You wouldn't know good talent if it reared up and bit you on the rear end.
To ThanksForMutton
2010 a s**tbox? You're as blind as a bat when it comes to excellent sequels. And 2010 was one of the best sequels ever made to a classic motion picture!

I agree that he's no great talent, but maybe "bad" is not the right word. He just creates mainstream Hollywood tripe and some people really like that (not me though).
I will never forgive him for the sh*tbox that is 2010.

Dear adamnad-1
I am currently unsure of how to address the totality of your comment. If you don not like his films, don not see them, it is that simple. People like me treasure his films, it is tough to make a big budget film in a studio system, especially when nature floods the sets. He has spent his life making films and what gives you the right to call him an "unworthy" director, after just spending a couple of viewings on his films. Mind you he has brought out some of the best performances from Van Damme and from Schwarzenegger. Bad cinematographer? I would like to see you pull of the same quality of cinematography he has produced. I could go on and on about your enduring letter of compassion for films, but I would just like to report your abuse to imdb for being a dumbass.
