I don't know but she's always sounded as she does now. Her voice has perhaps gotten a bit more gravelly as one's voice does with age and time. I've always liked the way she sounds. It's distinctive.

I wondered this too. According to Wikipedia, she says her gravelly voice is due to a 'bump on her vocal chords,' which could well be true. But she does sound like she goes through 40 a day!
