People were cheering at him like crazy compared to the other Best Actor nominees when his name came up. Why is that? His was the only performance of the five I haven't seen but to my knowledge he seems to be the outlier in the category. Was it an unconventional or likeable performance? Or was it just for him as an accomplished actor?

Um, the only unconventional thing I saw about his performance was his full frontal nudity - he's 58 - Hollywood loves that sort of thing. Otherwise, there was nothing special about his performance in my opinion.
