Was not as Lenny Briscoe but as a defense attorney or something like that. I can't remember the episode and I can't find the credit on here for it. Anyone know what episode that was?

Glad you asked this because I'm watching the series on Netflix and had this same question when I first saw him as the new detective, but the thought escaped my mind.

Before his starring role he also played a Defense Attorney named Frank Lehrman in the second season episode "The Wages of Love".
