Does anyone ever wonder why Guy's career never took off after what should have been a breakout role in LA Confidential? That film launched Russell Crowe (ironically another Aussie import) but not Guy and I just do not understand it because both actors showed star potential in that film. My friends and I are always disappointed when we see Guy wasted in bit parts or movies that really do not utilize his full potential.
Does anyone have any legitimate information or theories about why Guy Pearce never caught on as a star?

I remember when he was openly very critical of Hollywood's elite. I understand and respect being honest, but sometimes it backfires. It makes me think of John Waters, when he said he criticized Julia Roberts years ago and then found himself seated next to her at an industry dinner. The film and television industry is very, very small and I guess you have to be very careful to not offend a lot of people in it.

I am not sure why the thread started one way and ended up talking about his new wife and baby.
I felt like his health slowed down his career, if you watched The Time Machine you could tell he was very ill while filming.
New medicines, new treatments saved a whole lot of lives, thank goodness.

Old eggs are not very good, old sperm is not very good. I won't quote statistics but it i5b4s still the truth. If as an older person you feel like playing Russian roulette with your baby's life, so be it.
I have already been deleted once on this thread so obviously people think what I say is in bad taste, I disagree.

He's still very expressive in his face and eyes when he's actingif that's what you're referring to.
And why on earth would you believe his sperm is not usable?? What a crazy thing to say! He's only 48, not Grandpa Moses for crying out loud! I've often heard of men in their 60's marrying younger women and able to reproduce with no problems.
And though, the older the man, the less his sperm count becomesit is absolutely possible for men to reproduce throughout their 50's and older.
And on that noteI hope Guy has a little boy that looks like him and will follow in his footsteps. I think that would just be so awesome!

There was a time when you could look at his face and tell what was wrong with him. I hope they got the sperm from someone else. He is talented and certainly attractive but, I really don't believe his sperm us usable. Besides that, who needs a newborn at the age of 50that is the time for grandchildren.

I mean, I enjoy Crowe, but he does his Crowe thing - which is consistently good, but not that varied. Guy is a more chameleonic, creative actor.

Honestly, I think Pearce has far more range than the leading men of the day, and is better served in memorable character parts, where he's worked steadily for years. I don't remember a year without a guy Pearce film since LA Confidential. No, he didn't become the marquee name that Russell Crowe did, but I think that speaks more to the kind of actor he is than to a lack of success.

The number of threads asking why he's not A Big Hollywood Name are astonishing.
Folks, that is merely one measure of success and a truly shallow one, at that.
Guy Pearce has been working steadily since he was 19, which is indescribably rare among actors it's estimated that only about 5% of all the actors out there are making a living (= paying the rent), and a small percentage of that 5% are working steadily / are prosperous.
Pearce is an ACTOR unlike Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and all of the other glorified emoters. Pearce brings characters to life with subtlety and depth he inhabits characters. That's entirely incompatible with the Big Star In Hollywood ethos.
Thank GD he's an actor and not a "star." When I watch one of his characters, I'm watching the character, not half-remembering that he and his wife adopted 70 children or that he married some model half his age. He's actually an artist get it?

Guy Pearce is one of my most favorite actors and it's true that he's one heck of an actor. However, I just wish he had better roles. Oh well, I guess he is doing what he loves - that is more crucial than winning Oscars or Grammys.
And by the way, he has just gotten a divorce.

I guess it depends on how you define success. I agree that Guy is a terrific actor, much more talented than some people with bigger careers. But as someone else said, he has commented that he is happier doing smaller films. He certainly seems to get plenty of work, and has the respect of his peers. He has a long happy marriage - seems like he is very successful really.

I don't think he's interested in having a big Hollywood career. He has talked about being offered big films after L.A. Confidential and turning them down because he didn't like the scripts and didn't feel like he could make something interesting out of something dull. He also said he doesn't want to be a celebrity and feels more confident doing smaller films.
