I'm not a big fan. But his portrayal of 60 Minutes' Mike Wallace in "The Insider" was excellent. The movie is excellent!

Liked him in Dolores Claiborne, where he played the Detective who wanted to put Dolores away for killing her employer, since he'd failed at putting her away for killing her husband (She didn't kill her employer). I thought the gloomy, wet Maine atmosphere suited Plummer pretty well. His character was an odd duck - sort of a fanatic, but Plummer didn't make it OTT. And kind of mysterious - Dolores makes a wisecrack about his marriage (he had it coming) and he mentions his wife's bone cancer. And then he tells Dolores' daughter that in his career he'd managed to close every case to his satisfaction - except one.
I think he pretty much invented that character. It could have been played in almost any manner, and I liked what Plummer did with it. Boy did he have to take some shots from Dolores (Kathy Bates was hilarious and fabulous in it - should have won an Academy Award). It could have been a much more stock role, but Plummer was effective and made you curious about the guy.
Of course, liked him in the Sound of Music, where, oddly enough, I thought that as the rigid Captain he was much more natural and "free" than he was in other younger roles. At least with Maria.

Triple Cross (one of the few films, if not the only one, where he got top billing)
Hanover Street

I'm going to look that one up, utilitysinger. Imagine, another pairing of Chris and Julie! (Sound of Music is never far from my BD player).

Yes, his Hamlet was amazing.
I really liked the live TV performance of On Golden Pond he did in 2001 with Julie Andrews. It is on youtube in several installments. While I think they were far too young and vibrant at the time to be fussing so much about the end of life, they were wonderful.

There's a DVD of Hamlet at Elsinore which you may find fascinatingI did. It was made at Elsinore castle in Denmark in the 1960's, and Plummer makes a very good Hamlet.
