The Man in the Chair & Closing the Ring. Phenomenal performances both overlooked.

Exactly. You are 100,000% correct.
I just hated it though at the end of Plummer/Mike Wallace's extended tirade, that one of the other characters says, "feeling better 5b4now?"Bcz I bet in real life no one would have had the balz to say that to Mike Wallace. Loved it when Plummer/Wallace snapped at Gina Gershon when she dared call him 'Mike.' Haha. I bet that did happen.

Well, he just might get a nomination for BEGINNERS this time, although the young Ezra Miller is getting lots of buzz for an extremely challenging role in WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN and of course there will be others as we get closer to Oscar time.
Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies

I think he should have been nominated and won for The Insider.

Whoa there, son. Michael Caine has never given less than a great performance in his life, at least not on film.
It's not a zero-sum game. Both these fine actors were deserving. But that being saidChristopher Plummer is one of the greatest actors to have gone this unappreciated in the modern history of the Oscars.
Let's be sensible when we fill in the blank, folks.

How in the hell didn't he get nominated for his performance as Mike Wallace in The Insider? He was way better than Michael Caine.

I really liked him in "Ararat", and of course "Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus".

I have to confess I haven't seen either of those movies. Plummer was certainly cheated out of what looked like a certain nomination for The Insider (what happened? Much-respected veteran wins LA and National Society of Critics awards for film-stealing performance in heavily Oscar nominated movie yet is left off the supporting actor list in favour of, err, Michael Clarke Duncan??) Anyone have a theory on what happened there?
Another performance of his which I feel was certainly worthy of a nomination, at least, was his Kipling in The Man who Would Be King. A brief role, but he held his own magnetically against close to career-best performances by Caine and Connery.
