Assume George Reeves had not died (suicide, murder or accident) on June 16, 1959, and had lived many more years. Would he have actually wound up marrying Leonore Lemmon?
With just three days to go (as of June 16) before his scheduled wedding day, it seems highly unlikely George would have come to his senses and called off his impending marriage.
Still, given all the conflicting stories one hears about Reeves's last months, one wonders whether he might have been having second thoughts. In my opinion, I tend to think the bloom had worn off his impulsive romance with this incipient alcoholic and greedy society whore (let's not beat around the bush about what LL was), though things had probably progressed too far to really stop the train before it went over the cliff. But one could hope.
More realistically, how long does anyone suppose this marriage would have lasted? Especially with Reeves back working on the new season of
Superman
in 1960, acting and directing, and perhaps with things looking generally brighter professionally, I suspect having this drunken, publicity-seeking harridan around making life ever more unpleasant for him would have proven unsatisfactory for both of them before too long. I'd have given it eighteen months at the outside. Too bad there were no pre-nups in those days: I'm sure in a divorce Leonore would have tried to grab everything she could have from foolish George. Then again, perhaps Toni Mannix might have reentered the picture as "the boy's"
deus ex machina
and arranged a buy-off of this Lemmon that had so mysteriously appealed to him.
One of the saddest aspects of George Reeves is that, as kind and generous as he was to others, he made so many bad choices in his personal lifeas the actual events of June 16, 1959, bore out.
