marcusman48 — 14 years ago(April 30, 2011 12:36 AM)

I have seen Kristy in 12 different movie roles, and I think I know which three I like the best.
No, Buffy Summers isn't one of them. It's not that I consider that role bad (though I'd say it WAS mediocre); it's just that, sad to say, I don't think Kristy "owns" that role anymore, if you see what I mean. Watching that movie from here on out, as enjoyable as it is, is always going to be rather surreal for me.
But there's plenty to make up for it, and here are the three best (and incredibly enough, none of them are strictly comedic):
C1c84amille Shafer, THE PROGRAM (1993)
I realize that quite a few people would probably say that THE PROGRAM is really James Caan's story, or even that it doesn't really have a character focus (and that that's kind of the point). Still, this movie is packed with memorable and endearing characters. I think my favorite actor was Andrew Bryniarski (whom I first saw as a kid as the loathsome Chip Shreck in BATMAN RETURNS) as the loose-cannon but oddly lovable Steve Lattimer. But it was Camille whom I ended up genuinely admiring more than any other character. She was the perfect foil for the troubled hero (antihero?) Joe Kane, and she proves to be his salvation. There were many potential pitfalls that the characterization could have fallen into, but Kristy avoided all of them. Not a virtuoso role by any means, but Camille was definitely the kind of girl you'd want to bring home to Mom and Dad - and believe me, that is not insignificant.
Kristen Connor, HIGHER LEARNING (1995)
Here we have a movie not unlike THE PROGRAM, and with much of the cast returning besides. I don't think it's quite as good, but it's definitely interesting for what it attempts. As I see it, the character of Kristen was a true heroine at Columbus University: not perfect, certainly, and hardly the whole show, but a touching and true-to-life distillation of the college experience. Omar Epps and Michael Rapaport are cartoonishly over the top at times, but Kristy knows precisely which notes to hit and when to hit them, and how hard to hit them besides. I believe that an effective protagonist (especially if that protagonist is supposed to be an audience surrogate) should enter a difficult scenario, be tested by it, and perhaps even be changed in some measure by it - but not be corrupted by it. Kristen Connor accomplished all that: she may really be in a funk by the time the movie is over, but at least she's been true to herself.
Frankie Wells, BAD TO THE BONE (1997)
Oh God, where to begin? Sick and twisted and as dark as the deepest part of Tartarus, but a helluva movie! Luscious film-noir plot with classical "no-way-out" grim conclusion - and wonderful character-based acting, certainly more accomplished than you'd have expected from a TV feature with a crappy title. I am not joking when I say that BAD TO THE BONE should have been developed for the big screen - and also should have been even edgier, perhaps even rated R. Jeremy London was a sensation as sad, cowardly little Danny. As for Kristy.I could go on for hours! Right there! This is it! Take a picture, folks, 'cause it might be a while before you see the likes again! THIS, gentle readers, is everything that a fully-cooked dramatic villain should be! Frankie is the real deal! (Sorry to get so excited, but it's all sincere.) What a great "love-to-hate" femme fatale - and yet so completely believable! (Admit it: we all have a little "Frankie" in us; I know I do!) I was astounded by how much I got caught up in that girl's crazy, self-destructive scheme. By the end, I didn't know WHAT to feel: half of me wanted to see that minx's arrogant thick lips flop open in fear and shame as she got pinned down on the hood of a police car; and the other half actually wanted her to elude the authorities once again so that her mad misadventure could continue. Really, is there a purer acid test for a good villain than that?

I like her a lot as an actress, and the two films that immediately come to mind are:
Bad to the Bone
&
Chase
She's really done a lot of sub par films, so it's not like I go out of my way to see her, but I do like her quite a bit.

Well, my top five favorite roles of hers (with number one being the best in my permanent opinion) would be:
5. Samantha Pringle, the cyborg zombie in DEADLY FRIEND (1988).
4. Sue Halloran, the psychic day dreamer in DREAM TRAP (1990).
3. Erica Paget, the working single mom on EARLY EDITION (1998-99 season).
2. Natalie Voss, the accidentally abducted rich girl in THE CHASE (1994).
And, of course, the feature film title role without which people would still be saying: "Sarah Ma-who?"

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (1992)!!!!!!!

I gotta go with Samantha Pringle in "Deadly Friend." Kristy did a remarkably expressive job portraying Samantha after she's revived as a super strong and murderous automaton.
I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!

Sammantha Pringle from Deadly Friend
Samantha struggles with an abusive father (Richard Marcus), who ultimately beats her so severely that she is left close to death. The doctors tell Paul that she does not have long to live, and together Paul and Tom steal Samantha's body. Paul surgically implants BB's AI chip into Samantha's brain. Samantha is activated by BB's remote control and seems to be controlled primarily by BB's AI chip, although flashes of Samantha's memories periodically surface as her personality attempts to assert itself. Governed by this composite of BB's and Samantha's memories, Samantha, now possessing superhuman strength, avenges herself upon Elvira Parker and Samantha's father.
Jessie from Mannequin 2: On the Move
The film stars Kristy Swanson as a mannequin who was frozen one thousand years ago by an evil sorcerer using a magic necklace. She remains frozen until the necklace is removed and can stay permanently unfrozen if she receives a kiss from her true love.
Cathy Dollanganger from Flowers in the Attic
After the sudden death of their father, four children teenagers Chris and Cathy and 4-year-old twins Cory and Carrie find themselves penniless and forced to travel with their mother Corinne to live with her wealthy parents (whom the children had neither m5b4et nor been told about before). Corinne informs her children that there has been tension between herself and her parents for many years, but does not elaborate and simply says they had cut her out of their lives for something she had done that they disapproved of. The children trust her, though Cathy is skeptical at times.
Buffy Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Film The character of Buffy first appears in the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer film, played by Kristy Swanson. The film, written by Joss Whedon, depicts Buffy as a shallow high school cheerleader who is informed by a man named Merrick (Donald Sutherland) that she has been chosen by fate to battle the undead. Buffy reluctantly undergoes training in her abilities by Merrick, and as her responsibility as the Slayer causes her to become alienated from her valley girl peers, she finds friendship and romance with fellow outcast Pike (Luke Perry). Merrick eventually comes to respect Buffy's rebellious nature, and she defeats vampire king Lothos (Rutger Hauer) by relying on her own contemporary style as opposed to traditional Slayer conventions.[1] Although this film is not in continuity with the later television series, in 1999, author Christopher Golden adapted Joss Whedon's original script into a comic book entitled "The Origin", which Whedon later confirmed to be "pretty much" canonical.[2][3]
Diana Palmer from The Phantom
5b4The Phantom manages to arrest Quill's men and save the young native they kidnapped to act as their guide, but Quill succeeds in retrieving the Skull and returning to the United States of America. Meanwhile, in New York City, Kit's ex-girlfriend Diana Palmer (Kristy Swanson) is asked by her Uncle Dave (Bill Smitrovich) to travel to Bengalla in order to investigate claims that businessman Xander Drax (Treat Williams), Quill's boss, is resorting to piracy in order to locate a source of extraordinary power.
On her way to the Island, her airplane is attacked by a group of air pirates also obeying Drax, led by Sala (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who kidnapps Diana and takes her to a boat in order to stop her from further investigating. The Phantom is told of Diana's kidnapping by his friend and her contact, Capitain Phillip Horton (Robert Coleby). The Phantom then sets to rescue her.
