As I write this I am currently reading the book 'Italian Horror Movies' written by Antonio Tentori and Luigi Cozzi which I purchased from Dario Argento's shop Profondo Rosso when I visted Rome. Included in the book are treatments for two unmade movies. One for a proposed version of Frankenstein set during post WW1 Germany which Dario Argento was going to direct, written by Luigi Cozzi. The other is the proposed version of 'The Mummy' to have been directed by Fulci, written by Dardano Sacchetti who penned many Fulci movies.
From what I understand the project started with Argento, who had always been fascinated by The Mummy and wanted to make his own version. However, after viewing Terence Fisher's version of The Mummy he opted for Frankenstein instead, which never came to be. However, the idea of making a Mummy remake stayed in Argento's mind for years, so when he met with Fulci and they decided to work on a movie together, that seemed to 2000be the best choice. Fulci and Sacchetti wrote the script but Argento didn't like it, and instead suggested to Fulci that they remake the 1953 Vincent Price film 'House of Wax' instead. However, at a certain point they worried if the story was too close to the original than they be sued for copyright, so they started looking for other sources of inspirations, and with help from Luigi Cozzi, Argento sought out public domain stories set in a wax museum. After Cozzi discovered the short story, A Night at the Wax Museum, written by Gaston Leroux, they decided to partially base the movie off this. As we all know this film was to have seen Argento and Fulci finally team up, and be a come back vehicle for Fulci if he had not tragically died a few weeks before filming was due to begin.
Hope that helps
