A box office take of double the budget is what they consider break even these days, due to marketing costs, studio taking a profit, etc.
The majority of really profitable movies these days are the giant releases (that actually fill the theaters consistently) and the low budget films that go into wide release and unexpectedly make major bank.
Somet238imes it takes until the DVD release, and occasionally it may take years, but some of the films that were originally called flops in their initial release went on to become MAJOR cult classics and have continued to bring in a revenue stream years later my favorite in that category is The Last Starfighter. It was a really groundbreaking film, yet the story stayed simple enough that even the WWII generation could keep up with it.

So it doubled its money (most movies don't do that!) and earned an A- score from audiences (most movies don't get that!)
So by this logic, because it was financially and artistically successful, the studio will surely commission a sequel to it then, right?

Since it made Twice its budget, with TV streaming, DVD sales, etc, it has done just fine. Even industry trades now acknowledge this.
And you may not have liked it, but audiences rated the film an A- which means it was well received by movie goers.

It was not a failure, not at all. It ended up making a lot more money than they expected and made $357 Million and did okay. It was also liked by audiences as it got a high CinemaScore of A-. There may not be sequels, but the movie ended up doing okay.
