First commercial AIDS test was available 1985, but they found AIDS patients because their rare diseases and weakened immune system. There were tests to find certain antibodies which were presumed to be from AIDS virus. So there was a lot of speculation and several published reports about AIDS and possible virus behind it on summer 1983.
It is also speculated that this virus was generated in the US military lab to reduce world population or it was created by chance when hepatitis B vaccine was created in early 1970's and then tested on homosexuals.

Rohypnol, pretty much. Sadly not a question many women would need to ask

Actually they did and prefered to say BRD rather than West Deutschland if they had to make the difference with the DDR.
On a daily basis, it was of course Deutschland but in a more formal and administrative context, BRD was commonly used and accepted.

I did not like "Deutschland 83" but I would have liked it to succeed and get another season since it was done more professional and ambitious than usual TV shows. Just for the cause that it might have helped to release similar projects.
But in Germany the TV market is very unpredictable. I think the most sure shot is to do shows that are marketed for people over 40 or 50 years; cheesy shows about doctors, hotels and so on and easy-going crime shows. There are a lot beep shows like this that go over the course of 10-20 years.
The only thing were is some quality (and not always) are usually mini-series or dramas with multiple episodes. This is often working, but there only rare cases of longer running high quality TV series.

  • Is this kaput?

I heard an interview with the woman behind it. She is American (possibly half British) married to a German and it was made specifically for an English speaking market. She wrote it in English and had it translated. Hence the reason maybe why it was better received in the US ans britain than in Germany.

  • A ratings dissapointment in Germany!

Well, those songs were international hits in the early 1980s!
I liked the use of Peter Schilling's "Major Tom." I think it would have been better if the producers had used the German language version. "Major Tom" is so recognizable no matter what language.
Why not use music from that era?

  • Most obvious music choices.
