Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Sandy Dennis

Looking on these boards it seems a common criticism of Sandy is that she 'overacts' or 'mannered.' I am puzzled by this. From the work that I have seen of her, she is a remarkably understated actress. Her performances in Up and Down the Staircase, Jimmy Dean and especially Cold Day In The Park are incredibly nuanced and skillfully underplayed performances - everything is just there in her face. The only performance that could be even remotely be considered 'big' is her work in Virgina Woolf - but if you read the play, everything she does in that film is precisely what the character requires - the tears, the screaming - shes playing the role. As far as im concerned she is one the greatest actresses I've ever seen. Yes she has particularly idiosyncrasies but that could be said of all the greats. She's unique and a great.

I couldn't agree more. Thank you for posting this. What did you think about her performance in Woody Allen's Another Woman?

It's not my favorite Woody film or Gena Rowlands performance but Sandy Dennis was incredible as usual. The scene in the bar was the best bit of acting in that whole film - tiny role but her intensity blows everyone away. The dream sequence made me long to have seen her live on stage - boy would that have been a treat.
If you haven't though, see Cold Day In The Park! I'd say that's her best work.

I recently got Cold Day on blu ray. Amazing, shocking performance. Why wasn't she Oscar nominated???

It was a tiny film and few people saw it. Have you seen the chekhov play with her and geraldine page?

No, I have never seen it. I really like Geraldine Page as well. I need to find it.

Her face reminds me of a rabbit's. She seemed to be playing the same person in every film I ever saw her in.

                  Exactly like Jane Fonda.
