I liked Sandy a lot. I think she preferred the stage to movies. She won two consecutive Tony awards for "A Thousand Clowns" and "Any Wednesday, The screen roles went to Barbara Harris & Jane Fonda.

Yeah she was more of a stage actress and that definitely showed in a lot of her movies. She is one of the most mannered actresses I have ever seen. But she made her very theatrical style work on film. While I think Barbara Harris and Jane Fonda did well in the roles that you mentioned, I have to say I would have liked to see Sandy Dennis play those parts in the film versions. After all she did win Tony Awards for both performances and I am certain she would have recreated the roles beautifully on screen.

Absolutely. From VIRGINIA WOOLF to UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE and later films like COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME and PARENTS, she always gave great performances.
One can only wonder why UTDS and CBTTFAD aren't on DVD yet.

Sandy Dennis truly was one of the greats. Has anyone read her autobiography, published after her death?

Yes, her autobiography is a short, yet extremely well written tome, mostly written in a type of prose. It makes you long to read other manuscripts she may have written, it simply gives you a small glimpse into the mind of one of the greatest actresses of our generation. You can find it on Amazon usually relatively inexpensive.

Sandy Dennis had natural talent as an actress. Her death from Ovarian cancer broke my heart.

                  Up the Down Staircase
made me a fan of hers, as well as everyone else involved in the making of the movie. When I rented
That Cold Day in the Park,
                  I
                  did
expecter her to become a homocidal maniac, but I didn't expect her to give me the creeps as much as she did.

Plus, her 1st film was SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS (Kazan) along with W. Beatty (1st film) and N. Wood.

i loved her in a movie called " thankyou all very much " where shes having a baby,it was made in the late sixties but sandys character is certainly not having a very swinging time at all ,its quite a melancholy movie but beautifully played by sandy and indeed everyone in it,she was a one of a kind actress ,always worth seeing.

Another good movie she made around that same time was "Sweet November". I would love to see this one on dvd someday. It was later remade with Charlize Theron but the new version had none of the original's charm.

I've only seen her in "Up the Down Staircase", but I loved it! I could watch that over and over again. When my high school put on this show, I desperately wanted to play Sylvia Barrett, but the director played favourites. She picked a senior who had worked with her for the past 4 years and I got the part of Fran. I just brought in announcements and sh!t like that.
I haven't gotten around to watching the rest of Sandy's moviesI've had a hard time finding some of them to rent, but I already know she's fabulous!

Yes she was one of a kind - a very interesting actress to watchso sad that she is no longer with us. I love her in "Virginia Woolf", "Up the Down Staircase" and 2Come Back To the 5 and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean"

I too am a huge Sandy Dennis fan. She was one of the best actresses to emerge from the 1960's. She always chose extremely interesting parts and films regardless of box office potential. I wish more of these films would be released on dvd so new generations could discover this exceptional star.
