While I must admit I am an avid fan of this man's work (especially The Hills Have Eyes), I am getting quite peeved with seeing dogs getting killed within his projects as a means to up the gore.
While I am not sure whether or not this was necessary for The Hills Have Eyes (as I never saw the first one and so I don't know if dogs played an integral part within the original), I have no problem arguing that the murdering of dogs in High Tension and P2 was totally unnecessary.
Seriously, I thought killing domesticated animals was a relic of 80s horror.

The original hills did have two german shephards. I think only one survived. The rottweiler died pretty terrible in p2, dont remember one dying in high tension. I agree i dont like when animals die so brutally. Im not a veggie or anything though

I mean its a horror film, whats the difference between a dead animal and a dead human? Its funny how we are desensitized by human deaths but when an animal dies its like, wrong. Anyway I'm not saying that he should keep killing animals in his films, but if he wants to he should. After all he is the director/writer. Either way I just wanted to know your point of view on why its wrong to kill animals on screen. I'm not trying to start an argument I just would like to know your point of view.

Yeah I can see your point, guess we will just have to wait and see what happens in his next movie.

It's not like they really killed them. I think it's wrong in movies like badlands where they killed a load of dogs for real until they got the shot right. or Cannibal Holocaust where they really made the Muskrat suffer.
To the person who couldn't remember the dog killing in Switchblade Romance (High Tension) it's just before the decapitation at around 24:30.

I can't believe some of the replies here.
Only because the dogs don't actually get killed, it means it's acceptable? Are you kidding me? It's like saying "seeing the rape of a 10 years old girl in a movie is fine, because she doesn't actually get raped", wtf. It doesn't matter if it isn't real, it's disturbing and wrong nevertheless.
Not to mention that, just like the OP said, the deaths of the dogs in Aja's crappy movies are totally unecessary and pointless, just a cheap way to raise up the gore level.
A Rottweiler in P2, A Saint Bernard in High Tension (guess what, two of my most favorite breeds), and a random dog in The Hills Have Eyes. Once is not acceptable even if it's typical of most horror movies (sadly), twice is really nasty, three times is the proof that he is a dog hater (or simply a depraved person).
Seriously, you are epic fail, Aja. But don't worry, I'm sure dogs hate you too, bastard.

You do realize you're talking about horror films right? Lots of them are disturbing and wrong.
only YOU can prevent PG-13 slasher films

I am a huge dog lover (own a german shepherd mix) and I have absolutely no problem with dogs dying in horror movies, I mean it upsets me, but I think it is supposed to upset you. From the moment that Beauty dies in The Hills Have Eyes I wanted every mutant in that movie to die a horrible death, so when Beast destroyed a few of them it made it all the sweeter. I think you take movies a little too serious. I have no problem with a 10 year old getting brutally raped in a movie if it serves a purpose. I mean if I was watching a Disney film and some 10 year old got brutally raped it would be a little disturbing and weird, but I am fine with gore and butality in a horror film. Maybe you just shouldn't watch horror films if you can't handle seeing gore?
