I met Jean back in January 2016 when I visited her and her husband, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer Jack Couffer, at their home in Corona del Mar, CA. Their house is near the beach, and it used to belong to Jack's parents in the early 20th century.
I was talking with Jack about doing an interview with him for a documentary I wanted to make about the production of the film
Jonathan Livingston Seagull
, which Jack had shot.
I was mildly familiar with Jean's work, and I asked her about her role in Paul Schrader's
Hardcore
. She told me it was "a stupid little part" that she had only taken so she could visit Minnesota (or was it Michigan? I forget which). She told me that Schrader and George C. Scott argued constantly with each other on the set.
I never made my JLS documentary, but I will always be grateful to Jean and Jack for inviting me into their home for a cup of coffee.
