he was 34 years old when Good Times aired?.The dad of 3 teenagers?.was he "born" middle aged?? .you're telling me that this guy is younger than Ian Hunter from Mott The Hoople..ok, that makes sense.well, not really.

It is hard to believe. He definitely did look older on the show than 34. In the storyline, the character of James was about 40 years old when the show started in 1974. I think that they aged him to make him look older and closer to Esther Rolle who was in her early-50s when the show began (they were supposed to be the same age on the show). They also had to make him appear much older than Jimmie Walker who was in his late 20s when the show began but played a 17 year old. However, is it documented that he graduated from East Orange (NJ) High School in 1958 which would supports that his age is correct. The timeline of everything else in his biography supports his age is correct. If you look at him now, he looks about 75 years old or even younger.
