Still, you'll forgive us non-Americans if we don't jump to adopt this "figure of speech" ourselves 🙂

No need to over react or be negative, especially if not familiar with the expression. "All-American" is a colloquialism in the U.S. What it means is fresh-faced, clean cut, with a healthy, outdoorsy vibe, maybe a little preppy, maybe a little tan, a "good girl" look, not overtly sexy, though perhaps sexy in an understated way. The girl next door. Think Heidi Klum, Christie Brinkley, Taylor Swift, Bar Rafaeli.

I don't exactly see what is wrong for saying she dropped her accent?? I don't think they were trying to be offensive just trying to say that she did not use her accent, therefore she dropped it. Maybe that's just a common reference here?? Dropping it just means you stop using it, it doesn't mean she was putting it on for her entire life.
and All-American good looks doesn't really mean that other countries don't have attractive people! Even Americans are describes as being "all-american" it just means that she looks like the girl next door versus someone who looks exotic?
I get why the sentence constructed like it does was not very smart, but they were not trying to be offensive.

'dropping' an accent is not a new thing. Is simply an industry term here in the states for when some one speaks with an American accent instead of there native accent. You know, like Gary Oldman and Christian Bale in The Batman movies. Christian Bale even 'drops' his welsh accent for all the interviews pertaining to the Batman Movies. Taking offense to that is silly.

If "dropping an accent" means what you say in the U.S. film industry, then the "industry" is abusing the metaphor. "The industry" is also being regrettably parochial, because the phrase has no value for non-Americans.
            I know that
'dropping' an accent is not a new thing
, but I am almost certain that it's much older than you have suggested.
"Dropping" an accent is the metaphorical opposite of "picking up," or acquiring, one. While I don't have a copy of the complete Oxford English Dictionary (pretty much the unrivalled source for settling questions about the origins of words and phrases) I'd bet that English speakers were "dropping accents" when California (and Hollywood) was still part of Spain.

I agree with Simon-140. I was going to start a thread on it but you beat me to it.
What figure of speech, change you figure of speech to reflect what you are saying.
                  She is Australian.
What does "all American good looks" mean anyway?
That the rest of us are ugly? That only Americans are good looking?
                  So there!!
P.S: I have changed her bio, deleting the "all-American" from it. Lets see if it works.

If you're just skimming this bio is confusing.
I only read the bio because I thought in certain scenes of "The Last Kiss" you can hear a strong accent.
                      Turns out- I was right.

There's no big ethnic descent difference between most Australians and Americans. In fact it's pretty much the same. Going by her surname she's probably of English descent like any American could be. The mini bio makes no sense.

I agree, the bio is BS. And well said Travellor. It's so annoying how they had to Americanise it. Like it's the best or only way.

It means someone thinks she looks like a Farmer's Daughter, or a minister's kid. "All-American" easily translates to "Bible-belt goody-two-shoes".
I think the bio looks silly too. And I'm an American, but I'm not "all-American". An atheist, lesbian latina is about as un-American as one can get !

I just assumed she had lost 150 pounds between the bio being written, and the pictures beeing taken, making the "all-american good looks"-statement more out of date, than incorrect.

Anyway, I did the best I could to edit her bio a little bit. I didn't change any factsjust the way some of it was worded.
