Facial scars

I've always wondered where the scars on the right side of his face came from. There's the vertical one on his cheek just above the jaw, and the big one that extended from his eye to his hairline. At first I thought the one by the eye might be sloppy face lift work, but the fact there is no matching one on the left hand side, and that he already had it back in his twenties, when he was on My Favorite Martian, suggests not. Oddly enough, on all the bio sites I've never seen them even mentioned, much less any speculation as to their cause.
