Yeah, you expressed MY sentiments, exactly, thraso17. The special "bond" between "Miss Kitty," and "Matt," was understood. There was no need for outwardly open expressions of love; certainly
not SEX! Besides, "Gunsmoke" played in the "family hour," regular viewers wouldn't stand for a lot of hugging, squeezing and kissing between the two male and female leads. Their "romance" was a subtle kind of thing.

In a scene in a 3 part episode called "The Bullet", Matt lays in a bunk, seemingly comatose, paralyzed and possibly dieing. Kitty sits next to him and speaks out loud of their 17 year relationship. She mentions how she remembers the first day they met, when she first came to Dodge and how Matt didn't notice her but she noticed him. And how their relationship later evolved. She also talks about how Matt didn't believe his job was condusive to marriage and how she was willing to accept a non-perminant relationship. In the scene, she says she ran off a few times, but always came back and once Matt even went and brought her back. "After 17 years", she says, "this has to be the longest non-perminant relationship in history". She finishes by saying she wouldn't change a thing. In this scene, it is made quite clear what type of relationship Matt and Kitty enjoyed, and lets just say Matt wasn't only getting his beer at the Longbranch Saloon. When the scene ends, Matt stirs in his bed and speaks, allowing Kitty and the audience to know he heard everything she said fr5b4om the beginning of the scene. "I remember that day", Matt says (speaking of the first day they met), "And I noticed, Kitty I noticed".

Yea i remember that scene well myself, he was shot and on a train, doc was afraid to operate, a preacher talked him throught it. Kitty indicated she wanted more of there relationship but was satisfied with what she got. The original writers didn,t want a sexual relationship, the show worked the way it was, they didn,t envision a mrs. kitty. and as you stated it was a family show with solid values. But i dont belive she indicated she and matt wre sexual.

It wasn't blatantly advertised about Matt and Kittys sexual relationship, but the inference was there. It was dealt with in subtleties and innuendo. One could safely assume any couple who are romantically together for 17 years would most likely have a sexual relationship of some sort.
In another episode which I believe was called "A Quiet Day in Dodge", Matt returns from an assignment having not slept in two days. Its a comedic episode and of course everything that could keep Matt awake happens during the course of the show. During the episode, Matt finds himself apologizing to an angry Kitty for missing a dinner date they had planned and explains he was called away on business and couldnt get back on time. Kitty insists they have the dinner date that night and a weary Matt agrees. Needless to say, Matt doesn't get to nap and that night when he arrives in Kittys room, she has brandy and candles waiting certainly not a table set for two buddies having a bite to eat. Before they can begin dinner, a commotion in the bar calls Kitty downstairs and when she returns to her room, the exhausted Matt has passed out on her bed. Frustrated, a horny Kitty marches downstairs and past the bartender and towards the swinging doors, Are you going out by yourself, Kitty?, the bartender asks. Yes, Sam. Why?, Kitty replies. Well its late for a lady to go walking by herself you could get molested, Sam warns her. Kitty makes a mischievous smile, Really?, Kitty says enthusiastically and she throws open the swinging doors and breezes out into the darkness.

If you have watched any of the "Gunsmoke" follow up movies you will notice that Matt has a daughter (who is grown up, btw) named, Beth. I think, if I remember correctly, Matt ends up with amnesia at some point and has a "fling" with a woman who he is not married to and that is when Beth comes to be. Sadly, Beth's mother is NOT Miss Kitty.
Incase you care Encore Westerns is showing 50 straight hours of Gunsmoke in honor of the show's 50th Anniversary, this weekend!!!

Wow, Nat thanks for the info. Wish I had Encore Westerns available here. You know, I never watched the follow up movies. And I never knew Matt had a daughter. Btw, I agree with the donkey.
