'I Am Legend' Idiot for not recognizing an Icon?

For every scientist you can name that's an atheist, I could name at least one who's not. God gave everyone the ability to reason, but each chooses how to use it. Many people rely too much on physical intellect, and deny their "spiritual intel111clect" (I guess that's how I would describe it).
I have heard of Peter Tosh. I don't care much for that type of music. -

Bob Marley died in 1981. I Am Legend is set in 2012 (I think). that's a good 31 years (most of her characters life). It's isn't entirely unbelievable to think she doesn't know Bob Marley.
On a side note she does know who Ziggy Marley, Bob Marley's son, is. so really with that in mind it's a little idiotic to lose respect for a character in a movie when you don't take things like this into perspective. -

I don't want to argue, but the well known scientist has been a person of faith. Einstein, probaly the smartest man of the last century, was jewish. Schrodinger and alot of other scientist that dealt with quatum mechanics were catholic. The only well known atheist is Darwin and he just came up with a theory. I'm just saying that atheist scientist really havent made a significant contribution to the scientific field.

Not really. Einstein and Schrdinger both rejected "traditional" religions, and Einstein didn't believe in a "personal" God, but neither were true atheists. The poster you replied to wasn't "wrong" but they weren't entirely "right" either, at least no more so than you were. Einstein was a very spiritual man. You should read his interesting thesis on prayer. And in the case of Schrdinger, the rejection of "religion" is not the same as the rejection (or denial) of God.
In any case, there are many religious scientists, there are many spiritual scientists, there are many agnostic scientists and there are many atheist scientists. While no survey has been done, I would be very surprised if the distribution of spiritual beliefs among scientists was statistically different from the distribution of spiritual beliefs among the general public. Only pure ignorance would lead one to believe it requires an atheist to pursue science. The great advances that lead to the foundations of modern science were done not only by religious people, but encouraged by their respective religions. Just because Catholicism and Islam have both had dark ages where scientific enquiry was discouraged and punished, that doesn't mean there weren't periods when they didn't assist. Any cursory study into the origins of science would reveal that fact. Consider modern string theory, which is really half stolen from a sacred school of Jewish mysticism (the Zohar speaks of things like multiple dimensions and Plank length, but obviously does so without using modern linguistic constructs).
Science and religion need not be mutually exclusive. The real problems only arise among those who read the various sacred texts from a literal perspectivebut not everyone does. Even people with fairly high positions in various positions assume that religious texts are but allegory and metaphor. And there are many fields which wouldn't even limit a religious literalist. Botany and zoology for example do not contradict any major religious text in any way, even if taken literally.

As for Bob MarleyI see most people missed the whole point. What is Bob Marley? A legend. EVERYONE knows who Bob Marley is. What's the name of the movie? "I Am Legend." What was one of Marley's records? "Legend." For those who didn't read the book, it may be harder to get the significance. The title "I Am Legend" is explained much more clearly in the book.
"That was what the situation had been. Something black and of the night had come crawling out of the Middle Ages. Something with no framework or credulity, something that had been consigned, fact and figure, to the pages of imaginative literature. Vampires were pass; Summers idylls or Stokers melodramatics or a brief inclusion in the Britannica or grist for the pulp writers mill or raw material for the B-film factories. A tenuous legend passed from century to century."
"And, before science had caught up with the legend, the legend had swallowed science and everything."
And lastly, the book ends with:
"Robert Neville looked out over the new people of the earth. He knew he did not belong to them; he knew that, like the vampires, he was anathema and black terror to be destroyed. And, abruptly, the concept came, amusing to him even in his pain.
A coughing chuckle filled his thrb68oat. He turned and leaned against the wall while he swallowed the pills. Full circle, he thought while the final lethargy crept into his limbs. Full circle. A new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever.

Vampires were but a "legend," something no one had ever heard of. And yet they drank blood, stakes killed them, garlic kept them at bay and sunlight destroyed them. At the end of the book, Neville realizes he will become a legend too. Something no one has ever heard of, that sought them out and killed them, that only came out during the day. So the movie, to me, is a way to keep Marley's message alive, to prevent Marley's vision of love and peace ending things like oppression and racism from becoming but a "legend." And yethave we really 'tried' it? For all we know, the "legend" of Bob Marley is true: love can cure racism. But we have yet to find a way to inject "love" into people to test his theory.
If people haven't heard of "Marley", how long will it be until the entire reggae genre is a "legend" (in the fictional "I Am Legend universe) or music for that matter? Something that people say used to exists (or exists on some dark corner of the Earth) but that no one has ever seen or heard for themselves? By having someone not remember Bob Marley in the movie, the writers/director were really making it an homage to a dieing message from one of the original artists of that message. Music today is about "playas" and "gangstas." From rap right through to pop, this concept of "selfishness" and "arrogance" is becoming dominant. That wasn't Marley's message. Great post, wilddeepblue, I don't think many people notice some of those elements in the book or in the movie(since the movie goes deeper with more detail), that whole "love can cure racism, but we have yet to find a way to inject love into people to his theory" was great too. Great post, pal. I agree. LOVED the book and the movie.

That's your opinion, pal. But after seeing movies such as Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness, I Am Legend, Men in Black, I, Robot, Seven Pounds, Hancock & Bad Boys 1 & 2, I wholeheartedly disagree.

koffeenkreame41-1..Wow, you really think I Am Legend, Hancock, MIB, Bad Boys (either one) and I, Robot were good movies. Some of them were entertaining enough, but saying they were good is a stretch at best. At least you didn't include Wild, Wild West too

Good point, but the whole movie was a mess, so this didnt ruin it for me, the movie was allready ruined by that point.
