So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

No, I've never messed with the GOT Facebook page. I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family both near and far. Luckily, some of them are also Thrones fans, so at least we can post to each other about the episodes as they come out.
Ah, well. I'm really going to miss "gushing" too. I no longer gushed about Gerry, but there seems to always be a new handsome face every now and then that I want to come gush about on IMDb. I'm going to miss that.
I keep looking at possible new forums/message boards for movies, TV shows, and actors, and none of them fit the bill right now. I guess when you get so used to a particular format and style of message board, it's hard to switch. -

This is a really good article about IMDB shutting down the message boards and why it is misguided

That IS a really good article, Robyn. Thanks for sharing.
It's funny that just today I've watched two movies that I've not seen before (50 Shades and Magic Mikewe see what kind of mood I'M in today, LOL!), and my instinct is to go to those films' IMDb boards to see what is being said and discuss them.
It's going to really suck that I can't count on one easy-to-access site to do that with any movie, TV show, or actor in the future.
Damnit.
I know IMDb has issues with trolls, especially on the Politics board where it's just outrageous. GoT's board isn't much better, especially in the off-season. But that's not the case with every board.
I wish they'd close down the general topic boards like Politics, etc. and leave the boards for movies, TV Shows, actors and actresses. I guess th5b4e thinking is that the political discussions would just eek out into the other boards if they didn't have their own board. We know there were heavy political discussions on this very board years ago, and I've certainly seen political threads pop on on GoT's board over the years.
And I get the issue. I really do. Spend any time at the Politics board and you can see how toxic that place is. It's NOT a true reflection of our real life society. In real life, people with differing political views can discuss, debate, and disagree on things without it blowing out of proportion. But onlineespecially an anonymous, unmoderated message board, it just gets amplified X 100 be each side ruthlessly trolling and attacking the other side.
And, hell. We now have a President of the United States who trolls on social media himself, exacerbating the divide between the "left" and "right" even more.
It's too bad, it really is. People are so anxious to troll, bully, and fight with each other.
sigh
Magic Mike was really good. (LOL) -

Glad you liked the article Gretchen. I agree IMDB should get rid of just the boards that cause political dissent and over the top downright bullying and nastiness.
I refuse to watch any of the 50 Shades movies simply based on the fact that IMO the books were so very badly written they were insulting to anyone's intelligence who had ever read a good book in their life. IMO E L James would not know the meaning of provocative, titillating or 'erotic' if it jumped up and bit her. Just plain boring and repititive. Didn't she start with Twilight fan fiction or something? it really shows IMO and I won't be a part of promoting her. I hear Dakota Johnson was surprisingly good in the movies though. I will also not watch anything with IMO worst actor in the universe Channing Tatum (along with Keanu Reeves) if I can help it, so I guess Magic Mike is out for me too LOL. -
SiriusGrande — 9 years ago(February 05, 2017 07:02 PM)
Ha! Wow. Um. Well, I had never really paid Channing Tatum much mind, except in that Nicholas Sparks movie, Dear John. I thought he was okay in that, but I don't really like Nicholas Sparks movies or books (except The Notebook). I was pleasantly surprised by him in Magic Mike. He was witty and sharp, and I thought he did a great job acting. I've put off watching it for years because I thought it was just some flesh fest of naked men. People kept telling me it was actually a good movie, and they were right. I have more respect for Channing now. He's really good in it. Very natural and funny.
I agree about Keanu Reeves. He's like a robot.
I read the first 50 Shades. It's brainless smut for sure, and I didn't feel the need to go on in the series, but I hear they actually improve and the story gets deeper. I've started reading the Crossfire series by Sylvia Day (wellI'm on the third book, and I only started a week or so ago). You're right that 50 Shades started as Twilight fanfic. I'm actually intrigued by that as someone who has written fanfic myself. There is some outstanding fanfiction out there, some of it better than the stuff I see that's been published. But what's funny is, the Crossfire series is obviously knock-offs of 50 Shades. It's almost the same story, minus the BDSM stuff, and the heroine isn't as innocent as Ana. I think Crossfire is even more erotic though, plus it has a deeper plot and more developed characters right from the get-go. But, Gideon Cross and Christian Grey could almost be interchangeable.
For kicks, I tried watching the original Twilight movie on Netflix this weekend tooyou know, to revisit the "source material" of 50 Shades/Crossfire. God. Talk about a terrible movie. I read all of those books years ago. A student of mine let me borrow hers. As she'd finish reading one, she'd pass it along to me. Again, not great literature, but fun, easy reads. I can't remember if I've seen any of the other movies. I think so. Not really impressed with any of them.
Dakota really was good in 50 Shades. She's a good actress, and she's the only reason I could tolerate the movie. The guy playing Christian just didn't do anything for me though. He doesn't have the jaw-dropping good looks and sex appeal that I think is needed for that role. He looks too vanilla. -

I see some old familiar faces here! Yes, I miss the glory days here, too. Alas, Gerry and I went our separate ways long ago. And one of my favourite actors, John Hurt, just died.
I wish the old gang could come and hang out a bit before "boardageddon". I think I saw a TLoops somewhere on the board as I remember a trickster/troll, or who knows!! IB and Mobi and Medusa, good times.

Me too, Pais. The more the merrier. But I've gotten used to the idea that the boards are ending here. It is probably time, especially for this actor, who seems stuck in a rut. -

Hi again to Pais and Bootsie and others. So nice to see you here, if only for a short time.
Hey Robin, you have really been missed. I wonder if Geefu will come and say goodbye to us? I know she lives at JJ now, but she did stir things up here for years. I'm going to have to become more familiar with Facebook it seems. -

Hello, my bitches! I just stopped by to say au revoir, as I understand this board, (as well as all of the others), is going to disappear soon. What a lot of laughs we had here! Who can forget when we married Vonnie off to Gerald on Wikipedia. I laughed so hard I cried that day. Well, all things must come to an end. (Even my participation in the Republican Party - haha!)
Paisy, I got your message, and return the best regards!
I spend my time on FB these days, and try to ignore politics as much as possible. I am currently on a, thus far unsuccessful, campaign to get my husband to move back to Kansas City, now that we are done raising Lauren.
I forgot about Gerry a long time ago. Has he been in any movies? Did he ever get married? To a woman?
Best wishes and happiness to all of you. I'm friends with some of you on FB. You are welcome to look me up.
Why does a girl have to be so silly to catch a husband? -
barberry2 — 9 years ago(February 14, 2017 08:28 AM)
Hi Evil! Glad you checked in. I can't believe you've gone apolitical, but I understand why.
Yes, we've had some great times here. It's been pretty quiet for awhile though.
Gerry is an action star now. He has had an on and off again girlfriend/companion for a few years, but nothing official.
Take care. -
Robyn51 — 9 years ago(February 14, 2017 05:28 PM)
Nice to see you here again Evil and so glad all is well with you. Gerry is currently finding some success as an over the top action star and patriot who tortures and annihilates terrorists in a franchise centered around the White House and the President of the USA. So far there are the movies 'Olympus Has Fallen' (kind of like Die Hard' in the White House) followed up by 'London Has Fallen' and the next is 'Angel has Fallen' about Air Force One. Gerry stars as Special Agent Mike Banning and his action sidekick is Aaron Eckhart as the President. The topline cast also includes Morgan Freeman and both movies have done pretty well at the worldwide box office. POTO seems very far away these days. Who would have thought it eh?
I guess it really isn't like you Evil to not be so interested in politics anymore. I've been interested and following it all for the first time ever and wonder how long Mr Trump can go on like this with all of the backlash to everything he does? Perhaps people would prefer the seemingly very conservative Mike Pence? He does seem like such a nice man though and he and his wife did seem so relaxed and comfortable and in sync with each other dancing at the Inaugural Ball, as opposed to the Trumps who seemed somehow stiff and disconnected IMO. Maybe Melania is petrified for what Donald is going to tactlessly blurt out next LOL. At least she thanked the overseas soldiers for fighting for the US whilst Donald was just rabbiting on. I think she is quite lovely and she reminded me a little of Sophia Loren at the Inauguration, although I personally much preferred Ivanka's gorgeous ball gown and wasn't a fan of the gown Melania wore. I kind of thought it looked like a white flour sack tied in the middle LOL and thought it made her look pregnant when she turned side on. -

Wow, they are shutting down the boards?? I rarely post anymore but pop in occasionally just to see if there is anything entertaining. This place has been dead for a while. Back when I started posting here around 2008/09 I think this place was a laugh riot. Oh well . . . best to you all.

Wow, logged on tonight to get an explanation on a plot point of a terrible movie I watched and saw that the boards are closing! Rather disappointing!
I joined in 2005 and remember the days where we were posting 20/30 times a day. Silliness and fun all the time.
Ah well, times will change.
It's been fun! Take care, Everyone.
BTW, for you Dakota Johnson lovers, check out "A Bigger Splash." She's really great in that movie. I saw it because of Matthias Schoenaerts - what a talent!
Au revoir!

What a shame!
Often
when I'm watching a show or movie, I'll pop into the Imdb boards to read some spoiler or just see what people are saying about it. I'll miss doing that.
You do have to wade through the garbage/fights/negativity, just like on any other forum or comment section. I guess Imdb felt there was simply too much of it here. Right now there is SO much vitriol, rudeness and half-truths on the internet. It's really toxic. It's a shame if that's the reason for the Imdb shut-down. But if it is, I can understand their decision.
In any case, this place was better than a fan site because you weren't limited to just gushing. Better than Facebook or Twitter too because you could post looooong dissertations if you wanted. It was a fun board, very active for a while. Even GFW was a hoot.
I haven't posted in a long while but still checked occasionally to see if Butler is up to anything worth noting. I see currently he is not. I'll miss the silliness of it.
Best of luck to you all! -

Wow I can't believe these message boards are going to end. I just popped in to check on Legion and saw the announcement. Everything changes that's something we can always count on. For those who don't remember me I also used to be known as KatieJ.
I will miss popping in here and reading all your witty hilarious posts about good old Gerry. And I mean old.
My last words on that subject are that it's such a shame that he started out so promising and ended up so mediocre.
What I will miss most about these message boards is that people really communicated thoughts fully. Social media is so limiting.
Well238 it was so much fun while it lasted. I would love to see some of you around other places but I don't know your real names and you don't know mine so that won't work out too well.
RRuin, remember when I was an ultra-conservative and you used to tell me off? You know already that you affected me greatly in re-examining my beliefs, you'll be really happy to know that I have become a flaming liberal. And I like myself a hell of a lot more when I look in the mirror.
Lastly, the last few times I popped in here I didn't see Evil around. It's great to5b4 see you back for a visit and it's amazing that Trump seems to have pushed even you away from the Republican party? The orange monster is wreaking chaos everywhere. Hope we can all survive till he's gone. That's one good thing about change. Presidents come and presidents go. Thank heavens!
Bye all!
