My mother had a crush on him too, but I also used to think he was cute
He does look kinda girly though, in some pictures.
Here is more proof of the world's collective stupidity, this subject is actually on an IMDb board:

I went to see him perform at Harrah's Casino in Cherokee, NC about 5 years ago, and was amazed at how small and petite he is. I had the MOST major crush on him when I was young, so seeing him in person was a little "eye opening" to say the least. I was disappointed at how small he was, but he still had those gorgeous eyes and beautiful smile. I got to shake his hand, and I literally felt like I was 12 years old all over again! I was giddy!! lol

It's kind of amusing/annoying how people love to "Monday morning quarterback" the pop culture icons of a previous generation.
To put things into persepective, consider that this era's biggest gravy trains and panty moisteners, Zac Ephron, Justin Bieber, and arguably, at least 2/5 of One Direction, have all spent their heydays looking like prepubescent 11 year old lesbians in boy drag, while no one even bats an eye about them.
Meanwhile, DC from four decades ago gets the big ahem.
