Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Darlene Cates

    eltringham — 19 years ago(March 29, 2007 10:01 AM)

Eating stimulates reward centers in the brain. Some people overeat slightly and some people lose control of themselves.
While comendable, your example is anologous to a person saying that he has dropped drinking because he didn't like how he was drunk. Some people are drunks. Some become alcoholics.
Those people have a substance abuse problem and it is nearly impossible for them to control their behavior. One of the first things alcoholics anonymous tells people is to remember that they do not have the ability to stop drinking on their own at this point-they need help. And it will still be extremely difficult.
Many people that are overweight suffer from a weakness of character, but the severely overweight probably suffer from a compulsive eating disorder.

I am going to refrain from saying a whole lot of things I want to say here. I know that, as a fat person, most of you perfect people think I have no self-control but I do, and I will exercise some by not calling you some of the names that are flying through my brain.
I will say this: for those of you so disgusted by Darlene Cates in WEGG - and so disgusted by fat people in general - why did you watch this movie? Was it to laugh at her? To scorn her? To scorn Arnie because he, too, is different? Honestly, if you sat through this entire movie and the message you got out of it was that Momma was a vile character worthy of scorn and judgment, then may I suggest you log off the internet and seek some psychological help because you have absolutely missed the point of a wonderful film.
We ALL have demons. We ALL have our cross to bear. I (and Darlene) have the unenviable task of wearing our cross for everyone to see at all times, a cross that often serves as a whipping post for a lot of nasty people to vent their own insecurities. The good news is that my character and soul are in tact and mi16d0ghty healthy. I wonder what some of you would look like if character really WAS a physical state
My grandma used to say, "The jibes of a bully say more about him than they do about you". She was a brilliant woman.
Darlene, if you read this, keep the faith. You're a valid, valued, and beautiful human being with a lot to offer. It's very easy to pick apart the imperfections of people; it takes time and effort to see the magic and beauty that really does reside in all of us. Some people don't want to take the time to do that. Trust me, it't their loss. Life is a lot better on the kinder side of the street.

Darlene Cates was wonderful in that movie. Despite her size,I think she is very pretty and the scene where Gilbert introduces her to Becky and she says, "I haven't always been like this", just broke my heart. And the scene where she tells Gilbert she knows she has been a burden to the kids..
Also, Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as Arnie blew me away. It was the first thing I had ever seen him in. My older sister has a son who is mentally handicapped and some of the things he did as Arnie (the little tics and quirks) are identical to my nephew. This has got to be one of my favorite movies of all time.
Feel free to email me.. love to make new friends.

Ive read thro5b4ugh this whole thread, which is alot of reading and I must admit there is alot of insensitive people out there. Obesity is a form of eating disorder. It's the opposite end of the scale to anoerexia. But yet, it's something that people seem to not understand, in fact, they seem more comfortable just ripping the beep out of over weight people instead of being a bit more understanding.
So what I say is, if you don't like this woman, then get off the imdb board dedicated to her, and let the people who appericate this woman get on with expressing it.

doug, doug, doug. You are sooo uninformed it's amusing. ie: I'm in the medical profession and know better than to judge a person without actually meeting and talking w/ them. I myself have been fighting an unknown medical cause for which I LOSE weight the more I consume. I am 5'2" and weigh 89 lbs. People judge me also for their lack of knowledge. Ms. Darlene Cates may have a condition which demands sympathy instead of your direct conclusion as if you have insight into something maybe you know nothing about. Get Real man.

I think Miss Cates is a very sensitive and gifted actress. I've only seen her in Gilbert Grape but she did an exceptional job. I know it inspired a lot of personal acquaintances of mine who sit on the sofa and give orders a pause for thought. Well done. Sometimes people just get lost in the circumstances of their lives, rather than overcome certain challenges. Miss Cates put us in touch with that so gently in this movie. I think she's a great actress. She's also very pretty.

Her contributions to the fat acceptance movement won't be forgotten.
