Yes, the woman is morbidly, MORBIDLY obeseand you say that she overcomes this and that she's a heroif she would have overcome it, she would have lost some weight. Stop lying about this. The woman needs to lose weight. She is no hero, she's just caught lucky breaks in cinema when they needed a obese woman to play a part and didn't have the budget to buy prostetics for regular-sized actors. Open your eyes people.

I have to agree with the original poster it's like glorifying a crack addiction, or mutilation, if we call her a hero. I don't think we should be calling her a hero, but pitying her and hope that people can learn from her mistakes.
People should not be rewarded for being so unhealthy. Her condition is sad, and we shouldn't be cruel, but we also shouldn't be like "Oh, it's okay! She's happy and she's brave!". That's just my humble opinion though.

I agree. So this woman is a hero because she is enormous? It's not like she was born with a terrible disability and she is showing other people like her that it is something that can be overcome. She is simply a person who couldn't control herself until the point that she is disgustingly obese and now we are glorifying her because of it? It's just not right.
If that's the case, kudos to Lindsay Lohan. This courageous warrior has shown us that cocaine shouldn't be something to be ashamed of. Good for her that she abuses drugs and still has the ability to show herself in public. Great work!

No, she's not a hero because she's big. She's a hero because she's willing to overcome the humility that comes with her cinematic roles in order to get a message out to others. Being large isn't something to laugh at. And I think she's great for having the courage to do that!

people like you must be absolutely perfect, without flaw, and we should all envy you right? everyone has their flaws, some people have emotional flaws that cause them to seek comfort in food. it's not fair to compare people who are very overweight to lindsay lohan or a freakin crack whore, food is not illegal and it doesn't mean someone who overeats is spoiled like lindsay. many people who are overweight are overweight because of medical factors, and you can overlook that all you want, but you won't surprise anybody by your ignorance of science. some people have faulty triggers that don't give them a 'full' feeling when it should, others have a slow metabolism, others have crippling depression that causes them to live like a hermit and seek comfort in something like food. anyone, such as darlene, who's able to overcome this and put themselves out there in front of millions of people is a hero to anyone else who is going through this sort of thing.
god forbid any one of your flaws should manifest itself in a physical way that causes other people to come on message boards and degrade you.

Some people have emotional flaws that cause them to seek comfort in drugs. Some people had troubled childhoods, which cause them to use drugs as well. Some people are stalked 24/7 by photographers, which stresses them out and makes them relieve their stress illegal with crack. Some people, like you, shouldn't judge someone they don't know, and then comlain when others do the same thing.

I agree. I don't see anything heroic about her. It doesn't matter if I'm not perfect, I never said I was, but people calling her a hero b/c she is obese? There is nothing heroic about overindulging and happening upon movie roles.

Yeah I totally agree with the original post. Obesity is not heroic.
She is fat. How does that make somebody a hero?
Yeah so she's been in movies showcasing her fat & she's not hiding in a corner ashamed of the way she looks.. so what? She probably just needed some money.
I fear for the future if people in this day and age are considering obesity heroic. What kind of world are we living in?

Being obese is not good for the health of a person who is obese, and every measure should be taken to help those people to get the weight off if they are unable to do it themselves. This is a preventable illness, yes, but so are cancer and AIDS. We choose to honor people dealing with cancer or AIDS, but cast down those who are struggling with being obese. Yet they are all life threatening and difficult conditions to treat. We should not encourage or congratulate people for being fat, but we need not ridicule or reject them for it either.
Branding these people as disgusting or inferior people helps nothing, and actually makes their situations worse. It also makes the person who does the branding look like an a**hole who thinks themselves to be better than others. You might weigh less, but that's the only distinction you have with these people. You are no better than them, and they no worse than you. It's all a matter of different circumstances, nothing more.

i agree with the original poster too. There is no reason that she has not tried harder to lose weight. She even got the surgery and failed to follow through with it. I can't believe someone called her a hero. I'm sure she is a great person but to be called a hero is ridiculous. Unfortunately, there are thousands like her, and many of them have done something about it and fought their obesity. Maybe its genetic, slow metabolism, w/e but their is no reason why she doesn't try harder to lose weight. Your body weight is never set in stone. She is not just fat she is morbidly obese and is an extremely unhealthy condition.
I'm not trying to be a jerk. Like i said im sure she is a wonderful person, but i think the world shows to much sorrow for people like her. I've been fat before and I've cried and fought to lose weight and I did. I was never obese but nothing is impossible, and what she has is beatable and she is just not trying hard enough.
                            Just my opinion 🙂

I agree with the OP. . . and I'm obese.
How is she a hero because she is fat? Fat is fat. It doesn't make you heroic. Overcoming being obese by losing weight and conquering it is what makes you a hero.
I'm working on changing my weight and don't expect to be called heroic over it. How does becoming physically fit make you a hero? . . . I don't get it.

I don't think it's a case of liberals versus conservatives, but I think it's a sign of how watered-down our society has become.
We enjoy seeing celebrities gain weight and we make spectacles of figures like Darlene Cates, Susan Boyle, Tyra Banks, etc., because they can make us feel better about our own flaws.
This is "generation self-esteem" we're living in. Yes, everyone needs self-esteem, but today, people have taken extra heapings of it, and figure they don't need to change themselves at all. We can't call someone fat anymore, they are "Curvy" or "Curvaceous." I'm a size two but I consider myself curvy because I have round hips and breasts. But apparently that's not the definition of "curvy." Oh, and let's not forget all the crap we get about how "real women have curves." I agree that all body types are beautiful, but how effing insulting is it to be told that you're not a "real woman" because you can fit into tiny jeans?
People treat situations like Darlene's as if overweight people need constant praise and reassurance whereas thin people are immune to insults. You won't believe how many times people have told me "Tsk, eat a sandwhich already!" when I go out in a bikini (and I'm not even skin-and-bones). But would someone yell to an overweight woman "Just hop on a treadmill?" You'd say it behind their back, but not to their face.
There are plenty of women out there who are very sick from eating disorders and it is a very tragic and hard-to-understand thing, but at the same time it's wrong to accuse every small person of having an eating disorder, or worse, setting a bad example. Thin people are told they're setting a bad example just by walking out of their house (because apparently they're supposed to stay in hiding, like this "brave" woman did for so many years??) and yet we label someone like Tyra Banks - one of the most narcissistic beings to ever walk the Earth - a "hero" for "embracing" her "curves?"
                                  I bleed purple and gold.

Please do not characterize cancer as being preventable in all circumstances by personal action. Look at how many babies and young children get cancer what did THEY, or their PARENTS, do to bring this on? And how about non-smokers who get lung cancer (I've known a couple so far)?
Or otherwise healthy, slim women, and those who breast-fed all their babies for long periods, but came down with breast cancer (and reproductive cancers) anyway because, it turns out, the disease was in their family? Or men, 90% of whom will develop some form of prostate cancer if they live long enough, no matter what they do? Or those unwittingly exposed to various chemicals, radiation, and other probably unavoidable environmental factors later proven to be carcinogenic?
And what, pray tell, does anyone DO to get pancreatic cancer?
This is not in the same category as AIDS, which is clearly an infection that comes from very direct contact with blood and other bodily fluids, often from sexual activity and needle-sharing, against common-sense medical advice and often disapproved by society. Or obesity, a tendency to which may include hereditary factors and problems with brain and body systems, but also depends on willpower and self-control.
Perhaps the best thing is not to consider ANYONE a hero or heroine, even if they handle some unfortunate personal condition with grace. People shouldn't be rewarded for things they OUGHT to be doing anyway. Save the accolades for someone who actually goes out of his or her way to save SOMEONE ELSE.

yeah, she's no hero, not by a long shot, but seeing comments from people joking about how obese she is really pisses me off. nobody here knows her personally or the reasons for why she's so overweight. i mean, maybe she just eats alot. but usually when people are that fat, there's a proper reason behind it. anyway, she seems like a nice woman so just leave it and stop making cracks.
We are standing on the edge.

I agree with the OP, and I'm overweight. Being fat doesn't make you a hero, and sorry to say but making movies while fat doesn't either. Leaving the house and risking people laughing is certainly a nerve-wracking thing, but its not heroic.
If she lost all that weight, that might be touching on brave. Losing weight (especially after that 20 pound mark) is NOT easy, and anyone over the age of 25 (and without a single health handicap) who says so just doesn't know what they're talking about.
I wish her the best. She had issues she needs to deal with that brought on the weight, same as me and most heavy people. Its easy to feel overwhelmed when facing a big weight loss necessity.
