I know, she's a great actress. I can't believe that was her first go at acting, because she kicked ass. I hope she does some more stuff.

She actually lives in my hometown, Forney, Texas. I could probably drive to her house. I've never seen her in town or anything.

Where is Forney? I live in Spring, just north of Houston.

Ah, well, that would explain why she wasn't chosen for the role of the mother Edna Turnblad in the new Hairspray movie. In the first commercial I saw for the new movie, my first thought was, "Why didn't they choose that woman (sorry, didn't know her name prior to this thread) from What's Eating Gilbert Grape?"
I just thought she would have been PERFECT for the role. Sorry, but I just cannot see John Travolta in the role.
Of course, frankly, the only one besides Darlene Cates, that I could see in the role, is the original who played it, and that was the fabulous Divine. No one could play the role better than him!
Thank you for answering my question before I even asked it iLUVcrybaby. Much appreciated.

Forney is east of Dallas, 30 minutes out, cradled between Hwy 80 and Interstate 20, a quiet little town.

It's hard to believe she had never acted before appearing in Gilbert Grape. She done such a wonderful job. I really hated the way they ended the movie. If they wouldn't have killed her off there could maybe have been a sequel.
wow killing her off was the entire point of the movie! Gilbert wanted her to die in dignity. sequels are so incredibly over done. it was a beautiful film. a sequel would have ruined it. and she is not a great actor. i act and anyone who does knows she was playing herself. again i say, if she was thin no one would be talking about her performance. i respect the women, but she wanted money and fame, how is that heroic? who doesn't want to be a success? and who doesn't deal with problems in there everyday life? i think in your respect for the overweight actress, you lost the entire concept of the film.

Thats very rude and disrespectful what you just said about Darlene. All she wanted was money and fame? I think not. She was sought after to play that part. That took an awful lot of strength on her part to play a morbidly obese woman who gets made fun of and made into a joke by everyone on the big screen in front of millions of people. That is probably something that she has to deal with in real life every day and it must have been very tough for her emotionally to replicate that sort of thing. I admire her and would love to meet her someday to tell her that I think she is an amazing woman with incredible strength.

Wow. You're high and mighty aren't you. "I act and anyone who does knows she was playing herself." Hey, guess what? I act too. And she was playing herself to a certain degree. A woman that has limited mobility and considered a "freak" by many. But her husband didn't kill himself, she doesn't have a mentally challenged son, and other children to take care of. You have to dig deep for stuff like that, so don't discredit her. And how do you know she wanted money and fame? Maybe she wanted people to be aware of her plight? Maybe she wanted people to learn that it is unacceptable to look down on those just because they are obese? I think she did a wonderful job. And I will continue to think so. I hope some others agree with me.

                              its true.
if she hadn't died the movie wouldn't have been the same. The point wasn't that she could climb the stairs and start working out and get thin and Arnie would get a "new brain" and everything would be perfect. The family was already ruined, and this movie was about recovery. The ending of the movie showed how Momma overcame before her end, which was already coming. The burning of the house symbolizes the destruction of the root of the problems within the Grape family. If you think about it, the movie ends with Arnie still on the brink of death. It doesn't end with us knowing he's going to live a normal life. It ends with us knowing he's happy in the present, but probably won't last very long. In a way, however, (don't take this the wrong way) Arnie's death might be good thing. It would relieve the family of his burden. AS Gilbert said, "some days you want him to live, some you don't"
And yes, Cates is just an actor like all the others. Lets not glorify her work as a fight against discrimination or anything. I think she did a good job in this movie, but from a statistical point of view, you have to recognize that the number of willing actresses who could physically be Momma was limited, and Cates was the best of that particular pool.

Not every movie needs a sequel. Even the movies that get sequels don't deserve sequels half the time. It is possible to tell a story with a beginning, middle and end in one film.
