Never got her

It's called star quality. It transcends talent, looks, sex appeal, political standingeverything. If you've never seen her live on stage, you're at a disadvantage when it comes to judging her. She is truly magical..one of the few genius performers the entertainment business has ever had. But, to each his own.

I agree. When I was a teenager I used to hear Rolling Stones albums and thought they were good, but not THAT good. What was the big deal about them? When I was 19 I got to go see them at the Cow Palace in San Francisco and it was the greatest concert I had ever experienced. I would go to other concerts thinking they were going to be so great, but I would always be disappointed. Then I saw The Stones. Mick Jagger has a certain something - a combination of talent and some unknown quality of entertainment that is unmatched.
There are certain people that have a spark of energy that is not present in other live entertainers. Frank Sinatra and Neil Diamond come to mind. I've never seen Carol Channing perform live, but I can only imagine. I am 60 and I grew up seeing her on show after show after show. She is a pistol. She has a personality that is incredible. She is one of the most adorable people I've ever seen on TV and Film.
I love her entire persona. She's got those big, luminous eyes, that blonde, blonde hair, and that enormous smile. She absolutely loves entertaining and it shows. I love her voice, because it touches a certain place in my heart. She is 95 years old and we're lucky to still have her. If there were good shows on television today that featured talent, she might still be appearing on them, but unfortunately there are not. -

I never got her either she's a living cartoon character. The closest I came to liking her was on an episode of a short-lived '90s sitcom called "Style & Substance" in which she portrayed herself as an overtly annoying senile. But after years of wanting to see it, I finally caught "Skidoo," a whacked-out, all-star Otto Preminger LSD comedy which has become notorious for its sheer awfulness. Thing is, everything about the movie IS awful except for Carol Channing. She has the only funny lines, she sings a rollicking nonsensical theme song and steals focus from everyone else on-screen (Frankie Avalon, Jackie Gleason, Groucho Marx, etc.). Suddenly I've gained some respect for her.

If you want to gain more respect for her, check out her show, where she did impressions of famous female actresses. Here she is doing an impression of Marlene Dietrich:

Fully agree - many "celebrities" of that era (when TV went color and 'variety shows' were in) had no talent and were just famous for being "themselves".
Yeah, Carol Channing and Sammy Davis, Jr.one, a huge broadway actress whose career spans decades and another who was singing and dancing from a huge agewere both "no talents". Typical IMDB troll.

You're the only one to mention Sammy Davis, so not sure where you're headed here. Frankly, putting Carol Channing and Sammy in the same bucket is an insult to Sammy.
Having talent is not a prerequisite for becoming famous or for making a living as an entertainer, and many MANY people have proved that over the years (think Don Rickles) - some entertainers are just characters and that's all. The reason they can make a living with nothing of any real substance is because there are a LOT of people who are easily entertained. Entertainers are often like modern art. Two people can look at the same thing and one will see something moving and beautiful and earth-shaking, and the other will scratch their head and say 'what is it?'.
