Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Sam Cooke

    dominguez-rico — 18 years ago(April 26, 2007 10:27 AM)

hey, this is rico, here in los angeles, ca, i am currently working for a capital investment firm that provides funding for small independent filmmakers. the script for the sam cooke biopic passed my desk almost two years ago and it seems like the film is now in development, has a partial cast and has secured funding (not from our firm) but funding is secured. The guy heading this project is a young writer/director/actor Jerll Devereaux, I know him as an unaccredited writer who's been sending in material for a few years now, from what i hear the script is finished, it's an adapted script written by jerll devereaux, in which he is is acting in and co-producing. the film set for a holiday release in 2009 and a director has not yet been announced, although look out for Spike Lee to be approached for this project. the studio in association with jerll devereaux films is said to be working on a rights package to present to the cooke family, even though obtaining permission from the family isnt required by law (as long as the facts are straight) the attorneys for mr. devereaux and the studio funding this project will want to have their participation. i do regret not pushing to get this project funded a few years ago, but with that said, however great the story, our firm simply didnt see a market for a film about another african-american musician so close to the "ray" release, maybe 2009 is a better time for another african-american musician biopic. this kind of film, however great, is very hard to find funding for and market, so it's great that this kid had the balls to work to give this project legs. with that said, i wish him the best and you heard it here first. look out for talk to begin about the production summer 2007, an official announcement early 2008, a premarketing campaign at the end of 2008 and a full marketing and advertising campaign beginning in the fall of 2009, and a 2009 holiday season release.
for more information feel free to contact the production company responsible for this project, Jerll Devereaux Films, there is an official website, although it appears to be under construction, www.jerlldevereaux.com.
this is official information, i've been in this business for 7 years now and any information that crosses my desk about a particular project is official.
    Rico

Do they have an actor to play him?
If not, I think this guy right here is a dead ringer for him:

Here is his official website also:

I really thing this guy could pull off Sam Cooke if they decide to do this film.

Let's hope they're not doing the fluff-piece that Allen Klein and his siblings and family expect Please portray this great talent as HUMAN!!! He was a man! Not a Saint!!!! I wrote a script with SAM looking over my shoulder and whispering to me what REALLY HAPPENED and I defy anyone, ANYONE to dispute the version I channeled well before RAY was a glimmer in anyone's eye!!!
Feeling IS believing and my feeling is WONDERFUL WORLD: A SAM COOKE STORY can bring his legacy and life full circle - a cautionary tale that the young and old alike can enjoy - because it's the TRUTH!!!!
        Very truly,

          Hey, d.g.,
What's the "truth" you speak of in your version of the Sam Cooke story? I guess I'm interested in knowing what Sam whispered in your ear.

            HEY ERIK!!!
            #1 - I love your great uncle!!!
#2 - He was flesh and blood.
#3 - His music helped change the world, thus allowing someone who's in it for all of us, as citizens, to run for the Presidency (good friend of Oprah) instead of a select greedy cabal screwing everyone that isn't in their little clique.
#4 - Your great uncle told me to tell everyone still listening this, " people believe what they see but only half of what they read it's up to people like you, who can hear the loved one's lament to pass it on; The most important thing human beings can do is to treat each other with kindness and respect."
#5 - That we live in a world with precious little of that is awful.
#6 - Your great uncle's story is one that illustrates the Divine Dichotomy in
it's most publicly acceptable form; through music, deeds done, people's lives changed for the better, because it is truly A WONDERFUL WORLD!
#7 - People think I'm crazy because I see and hear things they don't. I don't consider this a problem, I consider it a gift and it's my solemn duty, as a conduit, to try and help people find a safe place to eat good food by "painting a cavewall near them" SOON! (Teaching positive stuff by illustrating and dispelling some negative - a neccessary evil)
#8 - We all live in Eden.
#9 - It's up to us, who follow our heart's delight, to pass on the goodstuff and point out the badstuff, thus letting each other in on the secrets to happiness and allowing those here to screw it up the chance to change their minds and play nice like your great uncle's message!!!
#10 - Your great uncle is proud of his talented family and friends and is always speaking to you in your heart of hearts you're well aware of his continued presence - that he didn't quite finish what he came here to do THAT'S YOUR LEGACY talking to YOU and YOU'RE helping!!!
            Namaste

Wesley Jonathan looks very similar to Sam, and I believe he could pull if off.

When I saw Chiwetel, I immediately thought of Sam Cooke. Wow.

If Spike Lee directs this I'll stop going to movies.
