How could you forget Cat Stevens? Didn't we discuss him?
Whoa, Sam Cooke must have influenced a lot of people. I didn't realize you knew so much about him. Thanks f111cor the list.
The three of us must be the biggest Sam Cooke fans at IMDb.

I think the Spinners' 1980 cover of Cupid was the most popular cover of any of Sam Cooke's songs (it got to #4 on the Hot 100 and was nominated for a grammy). Cupid was also done by Tony Orlando and Dawn. Rod Stewart and Luther Vandross both redid Havin A Party. Dr Hook redid Only Sixteen and hit the top ten with it in 1977. Simon and Garfunkel and James Taylor hit #10 with Wonderful World. I'd guess You Send Me is his most covered song. He sure as heck did influence a lot of performers. He, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles were probably the most influential r&b singers of the last 40 years.
There's a book about the history of r&b called Boogaloo (forgot the author, check www.amazon.com to find out more. The book has an entire chapter about Sam Cooke including a photo of him after he'd been shot dead in the motel wearing only his suit jacket and his underwear. There's also a photo of him in the open casket at the funeral.

I remember mi dad telling me that Frankie & Johnny was a take on an old Sam Cooke songI was about 10 years old. I adore both, even got a tattoo of Elvis's sillouhette on mi right arm, but Sam's version is far superior.
