The Dresser. But I also loved him in Doctor Zhivagochilling.

We pray you pardon all where we fell short
seeing we were your servants to this last." -Kipling, "Actors" -

"Billy Liar" is probably the best film that he plays the lead in. As for the best film overall I would say "Dr. Zhivago", which is probably my favourite film overall, and in which he gives probably the standout performance as the icy Trotsky-inspired Bolshevik Pascha Andropov.

"Billy Liar" because it's one of my favourite films all in all, but "The Dresser", "King And Country" and "The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner" come in not too far behind and have performances at least as good (although I also believe that he acted Billy Fisher not only superbly but definingly - it may not be the most astonishing role but he made it completely his own).
"Doctor Zhivago" certainly deserves a mention, too - to this day I am impressed by this rare example of an actor I love managing to keep my affection towards his character rather restrained.
