Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Jack Dodson

    Jaybone23 — 15 years ago(September 18, 2010 03:45 PM)

Thanks to TV Land's "Andy Griffith Show" 50 Year marathon, I recently saw the episode where actor Jack Dodson makes his first appearance on the showand NOT as Howard Sprague! Dodson first had a small role as insurance agent Ed Jenkins in the January, 1966 episode entitled "Lost & Found". Dodson would return to the show just two months later to begin his long-running stint as county clerk Howard Sprague. Dodson's character would appear in over 30 episodes of TAGS, as well as moving on to and appearing in over 40 episodes of TAGS spin-off, "Mayberry R.F.D.".
I sure wish I could grow a 'stache like the one Howard (and Dodson) was rockin' all those years!

That's interesting. It's been reported that Andy Griffith had spotted Jack Dodson on stage one evening and soon invited him to appear upon his series, which would correlate to about the time of Jack's television debut.
And then Jack begins the series in a role other than Howard Sprague, which must have been customized expressedly for him, because he's very good in the role.

That was about the same time that Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) had been given his own series. Don Knotts (Barney) had left the series and signed a contract to do movies for Universal. Howard McNear (Floyd the barber) had come back after suffering a bad stroke, but his health was still an issue. And even though I personally liked Barney Fife's replacement, Warren (Jack Burns), he wasn't given much of a chance to develop the character and was fired after only a few episodes. So, enter Howard Sprague, and a couple of years later, Emmett the fix it shop owner (Paul Hartman).

I just saw that episode this evening. I did not realize he came in so late in the series. Just thought he was always there. 🙂
