No, Italians are simply the ones who never left Italy. Italian is no less a derivative than Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan, or any other socio-linguistic/cultural group that came from Latin.

italians routinely play latins and vice versa. like for example saundra santiago, who played gina calabrese (italian) on miami vice, is puerto rican
Don't forget Al Pacino playing Tony Montana and Andy Garcia playing "Vince Mancini" in Godfather III. How ironic, like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife.
