Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Ed Flanders

    Nicoilli23 — 19 years ago(April 13, 2006 07:36 PM)

I just watched Bye Bye Love on OnDemand tonight and went straight here to look up what he's been up to! I cannot believe he committed suicide! It's so sad 😞
He appeared in the movie as the sweetest old man! May he finally have some sort of peace now after years of suffering. Wish he had gotten the help he needed to live the rest of his life happy, though

I just saw it on demand and came here too. I can't believe he killed himself.

I too, had no idea he had died, let alone committed suicide. He was so great as Dr. Westphall on St. Elsewhere. If you get a chance watch him in The Ninth Configuration. (I got it on E-Bay.) His performance is fantastic. I totally agree with the director's commentary.he truly deserved the academy award for his performance that year. Such a kind and gentle demeanour. May he finally rest in peace.

He seemed to be a nice man. He was a versatile actor.
          His death was very sad

He appeared a number of times on Hawaii Five O one of my all time favorite shows. I was surprised he killed himself. I hope he is at peace. He was a good actor.

We were just watching him in "True Confessions" where he was absolutely marvelous as usual. How awful to find out he killed himself. Poor guy! Depression is such a dreadful scourge. RIP, Ed. 😞

I just got here after watching the Ninth Configuration and The Exorcist III not too long ago. Only things I've seen him in, but it's still shocking to come here and not only see that he died but how he died.
                It's really horrible

I was just watching Bye Bye Love tonight and decided to look up an actor.
I looked up Ed Flanders and was surprised to see him pass so early.
Then I saw he had died by suicide and when I read his biography it said he had chronic back pain.
I have had back issues since I was in my teens and I can say it is very depressing and a lot of times 24/7 non stop pain.
I would never wish chronic back pain on anyone.
                  RIP Ed Flanders!
If you don't have much to begin with, then you don't have much to lose.

I'm sorry to hear you suffer chronic back pain, but I hope you are finding resources to cope with it.
I've just watched "Bye Bye Love" also and was alarmed to find out that Ed Flanders committed suicide. Oddly enough, he resembles Richard Farnsworth, another actor who killed himself.

I'm sure he had other problems too.
