Just because it's something (Norm Macdonald) intended to do doesn't make it funny.
I caught that on the Comedy Channel the other night where he was sitting there reading a newspaper while everybody else was paying attention to whoever was up doing their routine. Found it really distracting. Norm likes pushing the envelope like that and some times it works, but for the Saget roast it definitely did not work at all for me. -

you really missed the point of Norm MacDonald's set. I've never been a fan of his, but even I have to admit his bit was hilarious. he intentionally bombed for the first 2,3 jokes, but once everyone got what he was doing, they were all cracking up. it was brilliant. guess you just didn't get it

From what I understand Garlin was a very last minute replacement in that roast because Howard Stern's Artie Lange was a no show and later found checked into a rehab center. And if you noticed most of the other roasters were using their previously prepared Artie rips on Garlin that night and he just graciously took em. cool guy.
