His name clearly indicates he had Hungarian ancestors, yet I don't know anything about this, maybe someone could help me.

As far as I'm aware his parents were Romanian, specifically from Transylvania. He was my children's great uncle through my ex-wife and I've researched the family as far as possible (it's not easy researching people from other countries). The name is Hungarian, which suggests the family was originally from there. They changed their name at some point, other members of his family had the surname Valian, but I'm not sure which came first or the country of origin of that name. It's possible that they changed it to avoid religious or ethnic persecution, I believe there may have been bad feeling towards Hungarians in Romania at times.

That's very interesting. What you say about the change in the family name fits in with what I've always assumed. I'm curious to know more about your links with the family, as far as I'm aware Michael only had a brother and a sister, his brother was Eugene and he was my ex-wife's father. But none the girls names you mention are familiar to me, so this puzzles me. Maybe we should take this to private message.
