Well, you should be thrilled now, as she is now lending her name to one of the most dishonest, anti-teacher, anti-working class (think most hard working Americans will be able to afford charter schools once they've killed off their competition? Think again) piles of corporate propaganda ever to come out of Hollywood - and that's saying something.
Until this film (the odious 'Won't Back Down'), I considered myself something of a fan of hers No longer. By accepting this role and helping to push an absolutely false portrayal of public schools, she has revealed a great deal about herself and her true perspective.
It's certainly her right to be in any film she likes; just as it's my right to never - ever - plop down my money to see another film with which she's even remotely associated.
Dishonest corporate propaganda from people who stand to make money from privatized schools, straight down the line.
          Shame on Maggie Gyllenhaal.
          She
made the decision to accept a big pile of cash for
          dishonestly
dumping on hard-working, dedicated citizens. Now she can own the consequences to her career.
          Just Gross.

My partner was a high school teache5b4r for most of six yearsuntil she realized that couldn't teach in the literal definition of the term. The education system in this country is
            absolutely
broken. The teachers themselves are not to blame, unless one counts the false teachers that have fallen back on the union in order to effectively tenure themselves into having a do-nothing job. No-the admin and faculty are to blame, ALL of which (in our district with a population of 300k) have never actually taught, nor have a degree in education. It is not a meritocracy (like most careers) and doesn't give one sh!t about the students it educates-speaking generally, of course-but it doesn't take a weatherman to look out and see the weather, and what states say to the national government is typically the a version of 'F-k off'.
            hard-working, dedicated citizens
            No. Once again, speaking generally.
Given her IQ of around 190 and five bachelors degrees (poly sci, history, english, education, Latin) my partner quit teaching and went back to school. she is now months away from a PhD in Adolescent Literacy, already holding certifications in both qualitative and quantitative analysis (of which she knows the math/syntax longhand
            and
digital. Her dissertation deals specifically with race (not white guilt, she is very much chicana)-but that's with the foundation of the school system being broken. After international publib68cations (I mean peer-reviewed, not garbage) numbering in the double digits and giving talks around the world, she's considered among the most radical in her fieldand yet her numbers and research don't lie-she is too loud and stubborn to be suppressed, not to mention it's actually a
            more effective
way to affect change as the academic community is less likely to be like, well, the rest of the population. It's willing to admit when it's wrong.
Christ, we still have states that actually allow children into a
            creation
museum-and some people who believe this way are actually allowed to have families, make decisions for them or even in a political seat.
This is what happens when you say dishonest in this case. The story Gyllenhaal was a part of was surprisingly very valid.
            Any
attempt to persuade another in anyway is propaganda, so in effect that's what you're doing, same as I. That is not any sort of revelation.
So unless you've got numbers that the academic community doesn't, or some sort of revolutionary experience, don't see the movie. But read up on it a little more.
I hate private schools too. Here's a thought-did you ever think about when they started showing up? Desegregation of public schools was happening around the same time. Let's think about that and try not to reach for the available arsenal.
            Cheers!

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here TheButlerDidItYes. What if the people who believed in Creationism ended up with the most children and their genes and beliefs ended up dominating future generations.
If you've seen the film 'Idiocracy' you'll see the world I'm outlining.
That said, I also support freedom, and I certainly don't think it's the right of the government to dictate who can and cannot procreate. That sounds disturbingly like Nazi-style eugenics to me.

Your concern about perceived percentages is quite lame, but since you're addressing her appearance on that silly PBS DNA program I wanted to chime in on her odd comments about feeling Jewish while being inside a Russian Tea Room. HTF does one feel their Jewishness when hanging out in a Russian Tea Room?

Don't know about the rest of the program since I haven't seen it, but I myself would feel like eating a bullet if I found out I was even remotely related to the Bush family. That family is truly a waste of oxygen!

I agree with you 100%. That woman is 37, but looks 57. Her acting is terrible and she ruins every movie she appears in. I'm guessing that the only reason she was nominated for an Academy Award is that she is the daughter of a film maker and a screenwriter, and she tows the liberal line. She has taken to the media several times to whine about not getting roles. The most recent was the fact that someone wouldn't cast her as a 55 year old man's love interest because she was too old. Well, maybe it's time for Old Maggie to find a different line of work. She's a huge turd in the punchbowl, movie-wise.

She's OK and Gosling and Clooney are actually pretty good actors, but their politics is completely irrelevant to their acting. If it's tiresome that liberal actors talk about their politics all the time, it's even more tiresome that conservative douchebags constantly complain about it. Clint Eastwood is a Republican and talks to empty chairs, but he's still an iconic actor and great director. I could care less about any actors political beliefs.
Besides. I don't like listening to the political beep of ANY highly partisan blowhard, but at least actors have something else going for them unlike Rush Limbaugh, Rachel Maddow, michael Moore, Ann Coulter, ad infinitum.

Earl, he had no acumen to enter the school honestly but he got in. After he left he went to Oxford University despite having no qualifications, he was an Oxford Blue, a privileged fraternity and he was in the famous boat races while there. On leaving Oxford with a masters degree despite barely being able to write a page of text, he joined the army and climbed the ranks to General in just five years, despite having seen no action in person. He was a world renowned junky from his school days until the day he retired from the army as a 4 star general on his 28th birthday and on it went Please tell me what is elitist about that?
He achieved nothing and therefore cannot be deemed elite at anything. How people respond to him has nothijng to do with elitism, none of them like him, they just suck up to him and those around him to get on in life.
If he went up to any one of the millions of 'normal' people who have no reason to suck up to him or even show false respect how elite will he feel when they tell him what they think of him?
You see, a true elitist is universally elite with an elitism which spans across all social classes and which command respect from all. This the definition of Elitism.
You seem to mistake privilege with elite. A man passing the Delta or SEAL entry requirements are Elite. A man who buys himself into Delta or the SEALs is what?
