''Generally on dark shadows every actor seemed to have difficulty acting hysterical, probably due to lack of retaping, even Karlen was hilarious. Check out his reaction to the Dream Curse.''
HAHA! True! His overacting was shocking in that scene because he is one of the better actors on the show, he is a great actor in fact. He usually is better at acting hysterical, though.
Grayson Hall is the best at acting hystericalOK she is probably the hammiest with her ''NooooooOOOOOAAAAAAHHHHAAHHHOOOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!''. But she is also a great actress which is why she was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

I thought she was among the best actors on the show-and the fans did too. She was one of the most popular characters oin ''Dark Shadows'', and one of the most sympathetic.

She was by far my all time favorite on DS.

I think her acting is wonderful. I am watching the episodes right before the 1795 storyline in which Barnabas is trying to make Julia go insane by thinking she is being haunted by the ghost of Dr. Woodard. Her character fears for her life and sanity so she starts to scream hysterically and beg for mercy and I genuinely feel sorry for the character. Her performance was so convincing that I wanted to jump into the screen and help her because I felt she was really being terrorized. Julia is one of my favorite characters on the show and Grayson's portrayal of her is a big reason why. I can't think of one single actress who could've portrayed that character any better.

This is where I am right now. I went online to check if people thought her acting is so bad its good type of a thing. When she is playing a emotionally detached doctor I think she is actually pretty good. When Tony Peterson, in his first episode (357), asks Dr. Hoffman, Roger Collens want it that badly?, her expression is so delicious!

Is that the one where she goes absolutely insane, breaks down crying and screams "I wish it were Roger"? If so, that was one of my favorite scenes of the entire series. I felt so sorry for her in that moment.

Oh, I agreed with you wholeheartedly at first, and have said so for a long time. But now my opinion is moderated by what one person said about the director and another said about theater acting. A director saying "More, bigger" and a theater background where you have to act with more exaggeration to get the point across explains a great deal about what was really happening. What a shame because most of the actors were affected by this exaggerated acting, and it makes the acting on the series so much worse. I've still become hopelessly addicted to the show. Amazing.
I've been watching all of them - since around the 210s or whenever Lara Collins did her phoenix bit and tried to take David with her into the flames. When Grayson came on board, I thought she had only two or three ways to act which she then repeated over and over. It particularly irritated me when she raised her arm parallel to the floor and her hand to her mouth to express shock or fear. That was so "Perils of Pauline" that I couldn't stand it.
However, now I'm at episode #1089, and her acting has been much more subdued for awhile now. I've enjoyed her a lot more. I've always liked that there was a strong woman character, who is a doctor to boot.
Another character I can hardly stand is Willie Loomis. Karlen? couldn't do anything half-measure. Perhaps he was encouraged to do "more, bigger" as well. In the storyline where I am now, there is a Hallie Sto5b4kes (Kathy Cody) young teen character that is loud, hysterical, over-acting, with a sort of whiny high-pitched voice. I've got the impression, however, that that is how Disney etc. wanted girls to act in that time, but I haven't watched any movies from that era recently.
Did you finish the series, or did you get tired of it? Sometimes I take a small break from it, but lately I've watched three or more episodes at a time. They're so short.

Grayson Hall was superb as the (usually) cooly-emotionally-detached Dr. Julia Hoffman and as the salty, larger-than-life Magda Racosi. I also enjoyed Mrs. Hall as the haughty Countess DuPre on Dark Shadows; Mrs. Hall displayed a wonderful acting range on DS.
I think that fans today do not realize that the Dark Shadows actors were very often in every episode, with new lines to memorize each night, and they had to be at the ABC studios, sometimes before seven in the morning, a truly grueling schedule.
Today, with the longer one-hour soaps, the actors generally do not have to be in every episode, what with so many more actors in the cast. And, of course, if a blooper occurs while taping, the on-camera flub can be easily and quickly deleted, unlike the "halcyon" 1960s days of the beloved Dark Shadows.

Hi. I was a little too young to watch show when originally aired, but through the years re-disovered it. Absolutely love it-flubbed lines or miscues aside. Am currently re-watching series. I know this will be unpopular but agree w/ you on Grayson Hall's performance. For me it is the continuous, exaggerated facial expressions, the staccato-type delivery of her lines that make her scenes difficult to fully enjoy.
I get since it was recorded live/one take there will sometimes be mistakes but it's simply Grayson's mannerisms, facial grimacing, and halting/choppy delivery that detract from an otherwise gifted actor.
