It was an accident. Witnesses say he was playing around. He wasn't aware that a blank could kill you, which many people are unaware of.

If it wasn't a suicide, Jon definitely earned a Darwin Award for 1984. It's a shame the awards weren't conceived until 1985. No reason those awards can't be given retroactively.
