He just lost out to Michael Nader to play the character. Imagine if he got the part then he would not be cast in Cover Up then that incident would not happened, he probably might be alive now.

The story goes that at the time, he was having a romance with Joan Collins, his co-star in 'Male Model'. Collins wanted him to take the role of Dex Dexter on 'Dynasty', but Aaron Spelling decided against it. He didn't want to take a chance on him, especially if he and Collins were to break up at some pointhe wasn't sure 2000whether the two actors could work again 'as lovers' in the series. So he cast Nader instead.
As it turns out, he and Collins did end their affair within a year or so, and he married someone else shortly before Hexum died.

Jon-Erik and Joan Collibs were not in any kind of relationship. They were just friends. There were various reasons he didn't take the role, none of which had to do with the rumored affair with Joan Collins. A lot of it was made up for publicity. And fabricated with reporters.
Come to think of it, I'm not even sure he was actually offered the role. I'd have to check my sources. It was widely rumored that he was offered roles in Dukes of Hazzard and CHiPs and turned them down. Neither were true.
