I stopped watching at that point, was around the season 5 mark, but was this a change in character because of the actress or because of the actual role?

Really old post, but I've been watching 7th heaven back to back through all eleven seasons, and I'm currently on the 6th season, it definitely wasn't Catherine herself In the very beginning of season 5 is when they start to make Mary go into a downwards spiral because Jessica wanted to leave the show. Annie was just stressed and depressed from everything that was happening to Mary. The 6th season starts with Annie starting menopause, which I think is hilarious. The way Catherine acted so moody I thought was so funny. I don't know why people say they hated the Annie character, I loved her. She was actually my favorite part of the show, and I think Catherine was the perfect person for Annie.

Annie was my favorite part of the show, too. I've always wanted to be a mother just like her.
        Then- a place in time.
Than- preference between one or the other.
