I cried thinking about this man yesterday. I'm reading his biography called "The Untold Story" and just can't help at marvel at the sheer geniub68s of Howard Hughes! And I feel so sorry for him too cries

That biography is bogus. Don't believe half of it.
There was never a biography done on Hughes that he accepted or authorized.

He had his faults like everyone but he was a genius and very lonely and sick. It's sad.

The hidden years is what i would call the most accurate, its compiled by only two associates, the two closest to him.

Living in Utah Ive been exposed to a lot of negative publicity about Howard Huges' later years because of the Melvin Dummar story. But I was fascinated by The Aviator (does Leonardo diCaprio remind anyone else of James Dean?). And I just saw Hells Angels for the first time and was simply stunned. The zeppelin battle is amazing in the attention to detail of the construction and operation of an airship. And the climactic dogfight is obviously all real pilots in real planes. I have new-found respect for the film-making genius of Howard Hughes.

after these years, and finally seeing more news clips of Howard Hughes, and reading one of the biographies (forget which one) and sifting thru all the rumours and gossip, Ive come to respect the man for his brilliance and pioneering innovations in aeronautics.
If he had lived and been free of the terrible mental handicap whatever it was, I think the USA would have put someone on the moon a good 5 years earlier and WITHOUT the apollo launch pad disaster.
Howard Hughes summarily dropped development of a steam powered car when he learned the radiator could not be put in a safe location. his concern was for the safety of the passengers in the event of an accident. making airplanes go faster (his ongoing objective) meant they would reach their destination with fuel to spare, a safety margin, and always cost less in fuel leaving more money for additional innovations.
"google it if you dont think so ."
