You are right in that he campaigned on it. And in fact, he's been saying for decades that tariffs are the way to make America richer.
The problem is thus:- Pretty much nobody in finance or business agrees with that antiquated view. Particularly for products that are intermediary products, that are used in other products (think lumber, steel, aluminum). The stock markets are punishing him for that.
- Voters were not told there would be pain; quite the opposite.
- This economic policy is fraying political and military alliances. If it ever kicks off in the Indo-Pacific, allies are going to be reluctant to send their boys and girls to Taiwan to fight. Just a fact.
